EDU 202 Sophomore II Field Experience (0)<br />

EDU 203 Junior I Field Experience (0)<br />

Students participate in a 30-hour field experience with initial<br />

teaching and managing responsibilities (in conjunction with EDU<br />

310). (Fee applies)<br />

EDU 204 Junior II Pre-Student Teaching (0)<br />

Students participate in a 50-hour (10 full days) pre-student<br />

teaching experience in the same classroom in which they will<br />

complete their student teaching. Students are responsible for their<br />

own transportation.<br />

EDU 290 Multicultural Education (3)<br />

An exploration of global educational systems (focus on non-<br />

Western). Students will investigate the impact of culture on<br />

children’s cognitive and social growth. Includes an overview of<br />

English Language Learning (ELL) issues and instructional strategies.<br />

(Meets cross-cultural requirement)<br />

EDU 301 Social Foundations of Education (3)<br />

Extensive study of the school in contemporary America with<br />

emphasis on the three primary societies of family, church, and state<br />

in the education of children.<br />

EDU 302 Educational Psychology (3)<br />

Study of human development as it relates to the learning<br />

environment. Introduction to learning and motivation theories, as<br />

well as the study of educational processes.<br />

EDU 310 Orientation to Teaching (3)<br />

Approaches to teaching and learning at all grade levels. Topics<br />

include: objectives of instruction, lesson planning, higher order<br />

thinking, class management, and assessment. Effective teaching<br />

strategies applicable to all content areas are discussed. A 30-hour<br />

field experience is required.<br />

EDU 325 Student Teaching: Secondary (6)<br />

EDU 330 Reading in the Content Areas (3)<br />

An examination of instructional strategies that relate to reading in<br />

middle and secondary school content areas. The course will provide<br />

an overview of the developmental reading process, with methods for<br />

promoting students’ learning and thinking with reading materials.<br />

EDU 331 Creative Thought and Expression (3)<br />

An examination of the current state and national standards<br />

governing music, art, drama, and physical education for the<br />

elementary classroom. Resources for these curriculum areas will be<br />

studied and evaluated. Students’ preparation and presentation of<br />

integrated units of study for these areas will also be developed.<br />

EDU 338 Children’s Literature (3)<br />

Introduction to various types of literature for students in grades<br />

K-6. Emphasis on evaluation, appreciation, and presentation.<br />

Extensive reading on selected levels. Examination of crosscurricular<br />

literature and technology resources.<br />

EDU 341 Survey of Curriculum Standards (3)<br />

Examination and discussion of current state and national<br />

standards governing the disciplines of social studies, mathematics,<br />

and science in the elementary classroom. Study of resources used in<br />

teaching content, attitudes, and skills as well as student preparation<br />

and presentation of materials for these curriculum areas.<br />

EDU 346 Student Teaching: Elementary (6)<br />

EDU 347 Reading and Writing Connections (3)<br />

Integration of the language arts curriculum (K-6) will be<br />

considered. Various methods and techniques for teaching and<br />

assessing reading and writing in the elementary school will be studied<br />

and evaluated. Emphasis will focus on the developmental aspects of<br />

the language arts from emergent literacy to content area reading.<br />

EDU 361 Early Childhood Education I (3)<br />

An introduction to the field of early childhood education with<br />

emphasis on philosophy, program planning, the importance of play,<br />

and the curricular implications of the emotional and physical<br />

development of young children.<br />

EDU 362 Early Childhood Education II (3)<br />

A continuation of Education 361 with emphasis on the curricular<br />

implications of the social, intellectual, and creative development of<br />

young children. Also includes working with parents of young<br />

children. (Prerequisite EDU 361)<br />

EDU 381 Introduction to Special Education (3)<br />

A survey of the major areas of exceptionality with emphasis on<br />

the impact of the disability on the cognitive development of<br />

students. Focus on the educational implications and instructional<br />

strategies. Also includes an understanding of the legal rights of<br />

students with special needs and factors that promote effective<br />

communication with students, parents, and school personnel.<br />

EDU 382 Role of the Special Education Teacher (3)<br />

A continuation of 381 with greater emphasis on the specific<br />

responsibilities of the special education teacher within the<br />

classroom and school. This includes developing, implementing, and<br />

managing individual education programs, assessment, instruction,<br />

collaboration, and the legal rights of children and parents.<br />

(Prerequisite: EDU 381)<br />

EDU 383 Strategies for Special Education (3)<br />

Assessment, curriculum, and instructional strategies for the<br />

special education teacher working with a moderately to severelyimpaired<br />

population within a self contained classroom or in a<br />

separate school setting. Knowledge of programs and services<br />

within the school and the community that support children and<br />

youth with special needs. Required field experience in a special<br />

setting. (Prerequisite: EDU 381)<br />

EDU 384 Adapting Instruction (3)<br />

Meeting the needs of high incidence, diverse learners who have<br />

learning disabilities, mild intellectual/developmental disabilities,<br />

mild emotional/behavioral disorders, attention deficit disorders and<br />

general at-risk learning difficulties and who are typically enrolled in<br />

inclusive school settings, learning support or emotional support<br />

classrooms. (Prerequisite: EDU 381)<br />

EDU 393 Assessment: Theory and Practice (3)<br />

Contemporary issues related to testing, grading, evaluation, and<br />

accountability are addressed. Students will learn how to develop and<br />

use a variety of evaluation methods to monitor student academic<br />

achievement and teaching effectiveness.<br />

EDU 401 Independent Study and Research (1-6)<br />

Opportunity for individual study and independent research in a<br />

specific phase of education with the approval of the department.<br />

EDU 402 Independent Study and Research (1-6)<br />

Opportunity for individual study and independent research in a<br />

specific phase of education with the approval of the department.<br />
