An overview of the major social and cultural movements in<br />
Spain, its people and their contribution to the arts and literature.<br />
(Prerequisite: SPAN 303/333 or instructor’s approval). Offered in<br />

SPAN 315 Spanish Literature I (3)<br />
Reading and analysis of major works from the Middle Ages<br />
through 18th century Spain. (Prerequisite: SPAN 314 or<br />
instructor’s approval). Offered in alternate years.<br />
SPAN 316 Spanish Literature II (3)<br />
Analysis of literary trends and study of representative authors of<br />
19th and 20th century Spain. (Prerequisite: SPAN 314 or<br />
instructor’s approval). Offered in alternate years.<br />
SPAN 319 Spanish Women Writers (3)<br />
Reading and discussion of the major works of women writers of<br />
Peninsular Spain. Selected works are examined in the context of<br />
the literary and cultural conditions that gave rise to their expression.<br />

SPAN 323 Spanish for Careers (3)<br />
Specialized Spanish language for careers in industry,<br />
government, and service to respond to the needs of international<br />
transactions in the Spanish-speaking world. (Prerequisites: SPAN<br />
303, 333 or instructor’s approval)<br />
SPAN 325 Field Experience I (1-3)<br />
Supervised and directed placement in language-related areas of<br />
business, industry, government, law, commerce, or community<br />
service. Log and analyses are prepared by the student and evaluated<br />
by the cooperating agency or institution and the faculty director.<br />

Study of the development of the main Spanish-American literary<br />
movements in the novel, drama, and poetry from Colonial times to<br />
the end of the nineteenth century. (Prerequisite: SPAN 328 or<br />
instructor’s approval. Offered in alternate years.<br />
SPAN 330 Latin American Literature II (3)<br />
Discussion and analysis of the literary movements of the 20th<br />
century in the novel, drama, and poetry in the works of major<br />
Spanish-American female and male authors. (Prerequisite: SPAN<br />
328 or instructor’s approval). Offered in alternate years.<br />
SPAN 331 Latin American Women Writers (3)<br />
Reading and discussion of the major works of Spanish-American<br />
women writers of various periods and genres. Selected works are<br />
examined in the context of the literary and cultural conditions that<br />
gave rise to their expression. Offered in Spanish or English.<br />
SPAN 333 Advanced Conversation (3)<br />
Intensive group discussions, oral and written reports revolving<br />
around current themes and issues. Review of subtleties of Spanish<br />
grammar. Emphasis on oral proficiency and use of specialized<br />
vocabulary and idioms. (Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or instructor’s<br />
approval). Offered in alternate years.<br />
SPAN 334 Seminar (3)<br />
In-depth study, analysis, and presentation of research topics.<br />
This seminar is interdepartmental for Spanish-psychology and<br />
Spanish-social work. Offered in alternate years. This is the senior<br />
capstone course for majors. (Departmental approval required)<br />
SPAN 401 Independent Spanish Studies I (1-3)<br />
Individual research under the guidance and supervision of a<br />
member of the department. Approval of the department chairperson<br />
is required.<br />
SPAN 402 Independent Spanish Studies II (1-3)<br />
Individual research under the guidance and supervision of a<br />
member of the department. Approval of the department chairperson<br />
is required.<br />
SPAN 328 Latin American Culture/Civilization (3)<br />
Discussion of the historical, literary, and artistic development of<br />
Spanish-America from pre-Columbian times to the present.<br />
(Prerequisite: SPAN 303/333 or instructor’s approval). Offered in<br />
