POL 338 American Constitutional Law (3)<br />

The study of the impact of the Supreme Court’s power of<br />

judicial review upon the American system of government. Specific<br />

topics include the court’s effect upon federalism, the separation of<br />

powers, and the civil rights of free speech, press, and religion.<br />

POL 339 Public Administration (3)<br />

Study of the administrative process. Emphasis is on judicial<br />

review and the relationship of agencies to the executive and<br />

legislative branches of government and to public and private interest<br />

groups.<br />

POL 342 Foundations of Latin America (3)<br />

A study of selected themes in the colonial background, culture,<br />

nation-building, and contemporary evolution of a new society in the<br />

lands south of the United States. (See HIS 342)<br />

POL 345 History and Politics of Africa (3)<br />

Historical analysis of the major personalities, states, and<br />

societies of Africa with an emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa.<br />

Focuses upon colonial Africa, the subsequent development of<br />

nationalism, the political situation, and its impact on world affairs.<br />

POL 346 Middle East History and Politics (3)<br />

A study of the historic forces that have shaped the contemporary<br />

Middle East, and an analysis of the region’s significance in<br />

international politics including basic principles of Islam, Arab<br />

culture, and the influence of new forces in the Middle East. (See<br />

HIS 346 and MES 346). (Meets cross-cultural studies requirement)<br />

POL 347 Russia: Politics and People (3)<br />

Historical forces shaping the Russian identity and institutions;<br />

the rise and fall of the Communist regime, and contemporary<br />

developments in Russia. (See HIS 347.) (Meets cross-cultural<br />

studies requirement)<br />

POL 352 Nursing and the Law (3)<br />

Overview of the current legal structure of the health care system,<br />

including informed consent, medical ethics, malpractice, elder and<br />

insurance law, nurses and litigation, and health care risk<br />

management.<br />

POL 371 Junior Seminar in Political Science (3)<br />

Preparation for the Senior Seminar entailing an examination of<br />

topics to be explored in greater depth in POL 415. Students will<br />

prepare a detailed annotated bibliography for use in research for the<br />

Senior Seminar paper. This course is required for the major.<br />

POL 415 Senior Seminar in Political Science (3)<br />

In-depth research on a specific political science topic. Formal<br />

oral presentation to the seminar class, followed by a polished<br />

scholarly paper. This course is required for the major.<br />

POL 420 Senior Seminar in Politics (3)<br />

The theme of the seminar is “Managing Public Policy in the 21st<br />

Century.” Students will conduct research on an emerging public<br />

policy problem of their choice, situate the issues in a broad context,<br />

draw upon their classroom, field, and research experiences, and<br />

present their findings to the seminar.<br />

GEO 101 Introductory World Geography (3)<br />

A study of the physical environment for its geographic significance.<br />

Examination of the similarities and differences from place to place,<br />

on a world scale, of man and his works. (Spring semester)<br />

GEO 102 Urban Planning (3)<br />

Introduction to the methods of analyzing problems of urban and<br />

regional planning for growth, with special attention to housing and<br />

recreation, transportation and communication infrastructure, and the<br />

needs of business.<br />

MIDDLE EAST STUDIES<br />

MES 200 Middle Eastern Literature (3)<br />

This course will examine the development of the short story,<br />

novel, and verse in Turkey, Iran, and the Arabic countries. Because<br />

this literature is so rich and diverse, the specific subject of the<br />

course will vary from semester to semester. Repeatable to a total of<br />

twelve credits.<br />

MES 201 Wars of the Middle East (3)<br />

This course examines the history of conflicts in this vital area<br />

from the First World War to the current war in Iraq. While the<br />

course provides appropriate political, social, and economic context<br />

for understanding events, the emphasis is upon understanding<br />

international relations and military.<br />

MES 301 The Arab Encounter with the World (3)<br />

This course examines Arab encounters with the outside world<br />

from the Middle Ages through the present, looking at Islam’s<br />

outward reach in such areas as exploration, trade missions, and<br />

conquest, and at the response to foreign cultures.<br />

MES 302 History of Israel (3)<br />

This course explores the foundation and development of the state<br />

of Israel from the Zionist ideal in the late 19th century to the peace<br />

process with the Palestinian state. Topics covered will include the<br />

social, intellectual, and political motives for Zionism, the conflict<br />

with Arab nationalism, the effort to construct a new society from<br />

diverse immigrant groups, and Israel’s relations with the great powers.<br />

MES 303 The Power, Politics and Ethics of Oil (3)<br />

This course will provide an overview of the historic, economic,<br />

political, and legal development oil industry from its formation to<br />

the present. Special attention will be paid to the intricate<br />

relationship between the oil industry, the Arab states, and the world<br />

economy.<br />

MES 304 Modern Middle Eastern Politics (3)<br />

This course examines the domestic politics and international<br />

relations of the Middle Eastern states since the end of colonialism.<br />

Topics covered will include the tension between Pan-Arabism and the<br />

nation-state, strategies of political and economic development, the<br />

contested history of democracy, and engagement with the great powers.<br />

MES 305 Islamic Art and Architecture (3)<br />

This course surveys the diverse forms of artistic expression in<br />

the Islamic world from the time of the Prophet through the present.<br />

MES 306 Role of Women in the Middle East (3)<br />

This course examines the familial, social, traditional, religious<br />

and political status of women within a range of Middle Eastern<br />

countries and ethic groups including Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and<br />

Israel.<br />

MES 346 Middle East History and Politics (3)<br />

A study of the historic forces that have shaped the contemporary<br />

Middle East, and an analysis of the region’s significance in<br />
