EXS 302 Kinesiology (3)<br />
This course examines the human body with regard to how<br />
movement is created and maintained. The emphasis will be on the<br />
anatomical basis of human motion with the focus on the skeletal,<br />
neural, and muscular systems. (Pre-requisite BIOL 209-210 or<br />
BIOL 202 or with permission of the department)<br />
EXS 303 Exercise and Sport Physiology (3)<br />
This course explores a wide variety of subject matter that focuses<br />
on enhancing athletic and training accomplishments. Emphasis is<br />
on the description of relevant physiological techniques that have<br />
proven to augment readiness and improve performance in exercise<br />
and sport settings. (Pre-requisite BIOL 209-210 or BIOL 202 or<br />
with permission of the department)<br />
EXS 304 Exercise Assessment and Programming (3)<br />
This course is the examination and study of the techniques,<br />
procedures, and practical laboratory experience in aerobic strength,<br />
flexibility, blood pressure, and related measurements.<br />
(Prerequisites: EXS 302, EXS 303)<br />
EXS 305 Biomechanics (3)<br />
A study of the structural and functional applications of<br />
movement related to the physical constraints on body support and<br />
movement. Topics will include walking, running, jumping, throwing<br />
and swimming movement analysis. (Pre-requisite BIOL 209-210 or<br />
BIOL 202 or with permission of the department.)<br />
EXS 306 Sport Facility and Event Management (3)<br />
This course will provide students with the necessary background<br />
and foundation needed to plan, organize, and administer various<br />
athletic and/or special events in sports or other related activities.<br />
EXS 307 Sport Administration (3)<br />
This course examines the administrative tasks and<br />
policies/procedures necessary for sports managers in the operation<br />
of programs. Included will be the development of organizational<br />
skills and human resource management, issues regarding risk<br />
management and liability, and the development of media<br />
relationships.<br />
EXS 308 Exercise Program Management (3)<br />
The course examines the design and management of exercise<br />
programs. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation techniques<br />
associated with rehabilitative care. (Pre-requisites: EXS 302 & EXS<br />
303)<br />
EXS 310 Practicum (3)<br />
Requires direct participation in experiences with fitness and/or<br />
physical therapy facilities to develop and understand the use of<br />
exercise in the treatment and rehabilitation of a variety of injuries or<br />
the management of such programs. (Exercise science majors and<br />
minors only)<br />
EXS 401 Independent Study (1-6)<br />
The independent study course is designed to further enhance a<br />
student’s experiences in the Exercise Science tract through<br />
additional mentoring opportunities.<br />
EXS 402 Independent Study (1–6)<br />
The independent study course is designed to further enhance a<br />
student’s experiences in the Exercise Science tract through<br />
additional mentoring opportunities.<br />
EXS 403 Senior Seminar/Research Methods (3)<br />
This course is designed to incorporate the fundamental concepts<br />
of research methodology by research design and problem selection,<br />
literature review, statistical analysis and presentation of data in the<br />
area of exercise science and related fields.<br />
EXS 404 DPT/OT Seminar (3)<br />
This course is designed to develop the fundamental concepts of<br />
research methodology and to provide experiences in clinical settings<br />
for students preparing to enter the DPT/OT programs at Thomas<br />
Jefferson <strong>University</strong>.<br />
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />
Physical Education<br />
Upon completion of the physical education requirement, students<br />
will be able to:<br />
• Demonstrate knowledge of safe and healthy behaviors towards<br />
wellness and fitness<br />
• Show an appreciation for lifetime fitness activities as it relates to<br />
health and longevity<br />
• Understand the relationship between physical fitness and wellness<br />
and its application to all phases of life.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />
For graduation, all students in the College of <strong>Undergraduate</strong><br />
Studies are required to successfully complete Personal Fitness &<br />
Wellness (EXS 101) and to earn two physical education activity<br />
units. These activity units may be selected from areas of lifetime<br />
sports and activities, dance, and intercollegiate sports. Students<br />
with permanent medical excuses must complete only Personal<br />
Fitness & Wellness.<br />
• Students may earn one of the two required physical education<br />
units through participation on <strong>Immaculata</strong>’s intercollegiate<br />
teams.<br />
• Students not enrolled in the College of <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Studies<br />
pay a fee per unit (plus any additional fees) for elective<br />
physical education courses.<br />
PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />
Physical Education electives are offered in a rotational schedule.<br />
Personal Fitness and Wellness is offered each semester. The<br />
