MUSC 231 Aural Skills III (2)<br />
Classroom and computer-assisted ear-training will include<br />
medium to advanced melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic dictation.<br />
Sight-singing will incorporate chromatic and modulatory melodies<br />
with increasing attention to non-scalar passages. Rhythmic skills<br />
will extend to include asymmetrical and changing meters (50<br />
minutes lecture, 100 minutes laboratory) (Co-requisite: MUSC 230).<br />
MUSC 232 Music Theory IV (2)<br />
Summary and synthesis of all diatonic and chromatic harmonic<br />
structures and usages as found in the Common Practice Era. Principal<br />
work will include study of harmonic complexities in special situations,<br />
new directions, and an introduction to twentieth-century harmonic,<br />
melodic, and rhythmic changes in compositional practice (50 minutes<br />
lecture, 100 minutes laboratory) (Co-requisite: MUSC 233).<br />
MUSC 233 Aural Skills IV (2)<br />
Class and computer-assisted ear-training will be used to<br />
strengthen dictation skills with advanced melodic lines and harmonic<br />
progressions. Sight-singing will include advanced 3-4 part singing<br />
in major, minor, and modal excerpts, and melodic lines in various<br />
non-traditional scales, atonal, and twentieth-century patterns (50<br />
minutes lecture, 100 minutes laboratory) (Co-requisite: MUSC 232).<br />
MUSC 235 Piano Laboratory III (1)<br />
Sequential development of functional piano skills with emphasis<br />
on improvisation, transposition, scales and chords in the minor<br />
mode (Prerequisite: MUSC 136 or permission of the instructor).<br />
MUSC 236 Piano Laboratory IV (1)<br />
Sequential development of functional piano skills with emphasis<br />
on song writing to given harmonic progressions, transpositions, fake<br />
book songs, accompaniment styles, chording and harmonization.<br />
Final assessment will be based on a cumulative perspective of all<br />
four semester of Piano Laboratories I to IV. (Prerequisite: MUSC<br />
235 or permission of the instructor)<br />
MUSC 239 Counterpoint (1)<br />
Study of 18th century polyphonic style. Development of skill in<br />
writing two-and three-part counterpoint. (Prerequisites: MUSC 232<br />
and MUSC 233).<br />
MUSC 242 Composition (2)<br />
Application of compositional techniques in the writing of small<br />
musical works for voices and instruments.<br />
MUSC 247 Music Sequencing & Recording I (1)<br />
Basic level of the use of music technology through sequencing.<br />
MIDI tracks will be created through the use of sampling and<br />
modified sound modules suited for a variety of keyboards. MIDI<br />
compositions will be recorded and performed.<br />
MUSC 248 Music Sequencing and Recording II (1)<br />
Intermediate level of the use of music technology through<br />
sequencing. MIDI tracks will again be created through the use of<br />
sampling and modified sound modules. MIDI compositions will be<br />
recorded and performed. (Prerequisite: MUSC 247)<br />
MUSC 249 Music Sequencing and Recording III (1)<br />
Advanced levels of using music technology. Original multitrack<br />
compositions and improvisations will be developed by<br />
students. Instruction will emphasize recording and editing<br />
techniques. Final editing and mastering of compositions through<br />
the use of Digital Audio Technology (DAT) will be accomplished<br />
and prepared for performance. (Prerequisite: MUSC 248)<br />
MUSC 253 Internship in Music Technology (3)<br />
A practical experience in the music industry provided for the<br />
student under the supervision of a music faculty member.<br />
MUSC 254 Independent Project in Music Technology (3)<br />
A culminating presentation/performance developed by the<br />
student. Compositions and/or improvisations for the program will<br />
be selected from the student’s portfolio. (May be incorporated in<br />
MUSC 344.)<br />
MUSC 300 HON: Women in the Performing Arts (3)<br />
This course will investigate the acceptance and recognition of<br />
outstanding women musicians, composers, and performers from<br />
Biblical times through the present. Students will be encouraged to<br />
relate the research to their personal interests and academic curricula.<br />
MUSC 301 Music Among the Arts (3)<br />
Study of the relationship of music to painting, architecture,<br />
drama, and dance.<br />
MUSC 303 Applied Music Minor I-VIII (1 per course)<br />
Private instruction for one-half or one hour weekly; an elective<br />
for majors in a minor performance area. Lesson times arranged<br />
with Coordinator of Applied Music. Course may be repeated.<br />
MUSC 306 Orchestration (2)<br />
Scoring and arranging musical compositions for string,<br />
woodwind, brass ensembles and the full orchestra.<br />
MUSC 307 Vocal Pedagogy (1)<br />
This course will cover the various learning strategies for<br />
teaching private and group voice lessons. Course will address how<br />
to teach performance skills and techniques to voice performance<br />
majors and will include advanced diction training in the primary<br />
vocal languages. This course will be a continuation of Diction<br />
Class (MUSC 106) which will be a prerequisite. Required of all<br />
Music Performance majors.<br />
MUSC 308 Instrumental Pedagogy (1)<br />
This course will cover the various learning strategies for<br />
teaching private and group instrumental lessons. Course will<br />
address how to teach performance skills and techniques to<br />
orchestral, band, and keyboard musicians as part of a private<br />
instrumental studio. Required of all Music Performance majors.<br />
MUSC 309 Vocal Literature (2)<br />
This course will cover the standard choral repertoire for vocal<br />
performance majors and will give the student a working and<br />
practical knowledge of the vocal repertoire from the Renaissance,<br />
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-Century eras of music.<br />
Required of all Music Performance majors.<br />
MUSC 310 Instrumental Pedagogy (2)<br />
This course will cover the standard orchestral, band, and<br />
keyboard literature for instrumental performance majors. The<br />
students will gain a working and practical knowledge of the<br />
instrumental repertoire from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical,<br />
Romantic, and 20th-Century eras of music. Required of all Music<br />
Performance majors.<br />
MUSC 313 Professional Orientation in Music Education (1)<br />
An introduction to the methodologies, standards, and current<br />
issues of the music education profession. Course is taught in<br />
conjunction with directed observations in diverse music education<br />
settings.<br />
