MISSION<br />
The mission of the Education Department is to promote the<br />
preparation of authentic, knowledgeable, and exemplary school<br />
professionals by encouraging inquiry, analysis, creativity, and<br />
Christian values. To that end, studies are related to skills,<br />
knowledge, values, ethics, and professional standards.<br />
OUTCOMES<br />
The Teacher Education Program develops teachers who:<br />
• are competent in their field<br />
• believe in the dignity of their profession<br />
• realize the obligations, responsibilities, and standards of the<br />
teaching profession<br />
• are interested in the learning process for the individual student<br />
• are equipped to address educational issues in contemporary<br />
society.<br />
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS<br />
Program requirements are in compliance with state and federal<br />
guidelines.<br />
Students who desire to teach make application in the first<br />
semester of their sophomore year. In addition to specific standards<br />
of each certification area, general initial admission criteria include:<br />
a) scholastic record of 3.0 or above<br />
b) satisfactory completion of interview by the Teacher<br />
Education Committee<br />
c) satisfactory completion of six semester hours in mathematics<br />
and six semester hours of English (composition and<br />
literature).<br />
The following are standards for retention in the program:<br />
a) evidence of professional growth as demonstrated by<br />
successful completion of assigned field experiences<br />
b) maintenance of at least a 3.0 average in major area;<br />
maintenance of at least a B- grade in every course in the<br />
professional sequence, and a 3.0 average in the professional<br />
sequence.<br />
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION<br />
MAJOR<br />
In order to complete the Education Major, students must meet<br />
all certification requirements. Within the Education Major are the<br />
following certification options:<br />

• Early Childhood: EDU 201-202, 203-204, 290, 301, 302, 310,<br />

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS<br />
To become eligible for certification from <strong>Immaculata</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
a student must: attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0<br />
• maintain at least a 3.0 average in the specific area of certification<br />
• maintain a grade of at least B- in every course taken in the<br />
professional sequence with a 3.0 average<br />
• attain a grade of at least B for the student teaching experience<br />
• attain at least the criterion level of 3 (good) for each of the<br />
competency areas on the checklist of the professional sequence<br />
• present evidence of having passed the PDE Prescribed Testing<br />
Program (Praxis I and II).<br />

Students are required to take PSY 324 as a part of the social<br />
science requirement in the program of basic studies.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR SECONDARY<br />
EDUCATION CERTIFICATION<br />
• For students preparing to teach in the secondary school, it is<br />
possible to obtain certification in the following areas: biology<br />
(7-12), business/computers/information technology (K-12),<br />
chemistry (7-12), English (7-12), French (K-12), general<br />
science (7-12), family and consumer science (K-12),<br />
mathematics (7-12), music (K-12), social studies (history)<br />
(7-12), and Spanish (K-12). Secondary students major in the<br />
certification content area. (course requirements for students<br />
enrolled prior to September, 2009 and eligible for PDE<br />
certification prior to January 1, 2013 only)<br />
• Secondary Certification: EDU 301, 302, 310, 325, 330, 381.<br />
