9. MAINTENANCE,<br />

TROUBLESHOOTING<br />

This chapter provides the information necessary for the maintenance and<br />

checking of the <strong>FELCOM</strong> <strong>15</strong>. Please review the safety information at the<br />

beginning of this manual before attempting any maintenance procedures.<br />

9.1 General Checking and Maintenance<br />

Turn off the power before conducting any maintenance procedures other than<br />

the cleaning of the terminal unit.<br />

NOTICE<br />

Do not apply paint, anti-corrosive sealant or contact spray<br />

to coating or plastic parts of the equipment.<br />

Those items contain organic solvents that can damage coating<br />

and plastic parts, especially plastic connectors.<br />

Cleaning the terminal unit<br />

Wipe the LCD carefully to prevent scratching, using tissue paper and an LCD<br />

cleaner. To remove dirt or salt deposits, use an LCD cleaner, wiping slowly with<br />

tissue paper so as to dissolve the dirt or salt. Change paper frequently so the<br />

salt or dirt will not scratch the LCD. Do not use solvents such as thinner, acetone<br />

or benzine for cleaning; they can remove paint and marks or deform the<br />

equipment.<br />

Checking connectors and earth terminal<br />

Check that the connectors and earth terminal on the terminal unit are tightly<br />

fastened. If the copper strap (earth material) has rusted, clean it.<br />

Floppy disk drive head<br />

The floppy disk is coated with a magnetic material which stores the information<br />

entered into the disk. If this material is damaged by foreign material adhering to<br />

the disk drive head it may not be possible to read from or write to the disk. Clean<br />

the head regularly with a cleaning floppy disk to prevent loss of data.<br />

When the power can’t be turned on<br />

When the terminal unit cannot be turned on do the following:<br />

• Check that the power cable connector on the rear panel of the terminal unit for<br />

tightness.<br />

• Check if the ship’s mains switchboard is turned on.<br />

• Have a qualified technician check the power voltage at the power connector<br />

on the rear of the terminal unit.<br />
