ACADEMIC STANDINGStudents are expected to maintain a status <strong>of</strong> academic good standing.The <strong>Gallatin</strong> FacultyCommittee on Advisement and Policies reviews student records throughout the academicyear to identify those students who may be falling below the academic standards set by the<strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>School</strong>.The committee may summon students with unsatisfactory records to discusstheir academic progress and to determine whether, and under what circumstances, theymay continue in the <strong>School</strong>.Academic Good StandingGraduate students are considered to be in academic good standing when their current andcumulative grade point averages are above 3.0 (B average) and if they have not accumulatedan excessive number <strong>of</strong> incomplete grades. Students should also maintain satisfactory progresstoward their degree by completing, with satisfactory grades, more than half <strong>of</strong> the coursesand units for which they register in any semester. Students newly admitted are presumed tobe in academic good standing, unless they were admitted on a probationary status.Students whose grade point average or accumulation <strong>of</strong> incomplete grades suggests potentialproblems may receive an informal letter cautioning them about their situation andadvising them to speak with their adviser; this notification does not appear on the students’academic record.ProbationStudents with unsatisfactory academic records are placed on probation under the followingcircumstances: if the current grade point average falls below 3.0, if the cumulative gradepoint average falls below 3.0, or if the student accumulates 8 or more units <strong>of</strong> incomplete.Students who have an excessive number <strong>of</strong> withdrawals may also be placed on probation.When a student is placed on probation, a letter is sent to the student, the student’s adviserand the Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Registrar.This letter will specify the period <strong>of</strong> timethe student has been given to improve his or her academic standing, the minimum gradepoint average the student must earn in the subsequent semester and any other conditionsthe <strong>Gallatin</strong> Faculty Committee on Advisement and Policies determines to be appropriate.The designation “Probation” is placed on the student’s transcript.The student may be required to submit a statement to the committee explaining his orher poor academic performance and stating his or her plans to reverse the decline in grades.In some cases, the committee may summon the student to appear in person.100 <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Bulletin</strong> 2012-2013
