GALLATIN SCHOOL OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDYMerely ceasing to attend a class does not constitute an official drop or withdrawal, nordoes notification to the instructor.A stop payment of a check presented for tuition does notconstitute an official drop or withdrawal, nor does it reduce indebtedness to the University.The nonrefundable registration fee and a penalty fee of $20 for a stopped payment must becharged in addition to any tuition not canceled.The date on which a student officially drops a class, not the last date of attendance in theclass, is considered the official date that serves as the basis for computing any refund grantedthe student.Refund ScheduleThe refund period (see schedule below) is defined as the first four calendar weeks of the falland spring semesters or the first eight calendar days of a six-week summer session from thedate on which the course is officially dropped. For information on how to officially drop aclass, see Dropping Courses, page 89. For information on tuition refunds for Gallatin courseofferings abroad, consult the Gallatin Office of Global Programs. For information on tuitionrefunds for the University’s January Session and May Intensive Session, consult theWeb siteof the Office of the Bursar at www.nyu.edu/bursar/tuition.fees/. The processing of refundstakes approximately two weeks.Exceptions to the published refund schedule are rarely granted.Students may request an exceptionto the published refund schedule by filing a written appeal to the Refund ReviewCommittee of the Gallatin School.All appeals must be supported by appropriate documentationregarding the circumstances that warrant consideration of an exception. Students cannotreceive more than one exception to the published refund schedule in their academic careers.Federal regulations require adjustments reducing financial aid if a student withdraws evenafter the NYU refund period. Financial aid amounts will be adjusted for students who withdrawthrough the ninth week of the semester and have received any federal grants or loans.This adjustment may result in the student’s bill not being fully paid. NYU will bill the studentfor this difference.The student will be responsible for payment of this bill before returningto the University and will remain responsible for payment even if he or she does notreturn to the University.For any semester a student receives any aid, that semester will be counted in the satisfactoryacademic progress standard.This may require the student to make up units before receivingany further aid. Students should review the “satisfactory academic progress” standardfor the Gallatin School so they do not jeopardize further semesters of aid.
