NEW YORK UNIVERSITYCauses Without BordersELEC-GG 2730 Nesiah. 4 unitsOne <strong>of</strong> the most distinctive dimensions <strong>of</strong> contemporary globalization has been the flourishing<strong>of</strong> transnational activism. Causes,organizations and activist networks have crossed bordersalongside capital, goods and labor to reshape the terrain <strong>of</strong> political engagement. Thisclass examines the enabling conditions and (intended and unintended) consequences <strong>of</strong> thisturn to transnational activism in relation to other dimensions <strong>of</strong> contemporary global governance.The course will focus on human rights initiatives, including international nongovernmentalorganizations such as Amnesty International and transnational campaigns suchas ‘Save Darfur’. Reading important critical interventions <strong>of</strong> the last decade, the class willcollectively analyze how different approaches mobilize and challenge different actors, causesand alternative imaginings <strong>of</strong> ‘the global’. The course is open to graduate students and advancedundergraduates. Readings are likely to draw from Sydney Tarrow, Clifford Bob,Daniel Bell, Kathryin Sikkink, Sally Merry, Stephen Hopgood, Mahmoud Mamdani, KamariClark,Wendy Hesford andValerie Sperling.STUDY ABROADBoth NYU and <strong>Gallatin</strong> are working to develop more opportunities for graduate studentsto study abroad. Many <strong>of</strong> these opportunities will take the form <strong>of</strong> two- to four-week travelcourses <strong>of</strong>fered in the winter or summer Intersessions.
