NEW YORK UNIVERSITYWithdrawalStudents receiving federal student aid who withdraw completely may be billed for remainingbalances resulting from the mandatory return <strong>of</strong> funds to the U.S. government. Theamount <strong>of</strong> federal aid “earned” up to that point is determined by the withdrawal date anda calculation based upon the federally prescribed formula. Generally, federal assistance isearned on a pro-rata basis.SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTSEligibility for merit-based and/or need-based scholarships at NYU is determined upon entranceto the <strong>University</strong> based on prior academic strengths and, if you apply for financial aid,your demonstrated financial need.<strong>University</strong> Sponsored and <strong>University</strong> Administered ProgramsThrough the generosity <strong>of</strong> its alumni and other concerned citizens, as well as from funds suppliedby the federal government, the <strong>University</strong> is able to provide an extensive financial aidprogram for its students. Awards are competitive and are based on a combination <strong>of</strong> academicachievement, applicable test scores, and, in most cases, financial need. No separate applicationis necessary.Federal Scholarships and GrantsEligibility is based on submission <strong>of</strong> the FAFSA, and no separate application is necessary.State Grants<strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> State <strong>of</strong>fers a wide variety <strong>of</strong> grants and scholarships to residents, subject to theannual availability <strong>of</strong> funds.Application is made directly to the state and grants are awardedby the state. <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> State programs are listed at www.hesc.com.Some students from outside <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> State may qualify for funds from their own statescholarship programs that can be used at <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Contact your state financialaid agency (call 1-800-433-3243 to obtain contact information) to ask about program requirementsand application procedures.When you receive an eligibility notice from yourstate program, you should submit it immediately to the NYU Office <strong>of</strong> Financial Aid.Scholarships and Grants from Other OrganizationsStudents may be eligible for a private scholarship or grant from an outside agency. Somesources to explore are employers, unions, pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations and community andspecial interest groups.A number <strong>of</strong> extensive scholarship search resources are available freeonline, and several are featured at www.nyu.edu/financial.aid.
