NEW YORK UNIVERSITY<strong>Gallatin</strong> Civic Engagement<strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> opportunities through which students may commit their time andskills to community-related endeavors. Some <strong>of</strong> these projects may be part <strong>of</strong> a credit-bearingpursuit such as a class or an individualized project, while others are extracurricular, volunteeractivities.CREDIT-BEARING COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES<strong>Gallatin</strong> InternshipsInternships with a community service focus can be arranged in all areas, including education,youth services, rehabilitation services, the arts and social services, among others. Formore information, contact Faith Stangler, director <strong>of</strong> external programs, 212-998-7376,faith.stangler@nyu.edu.Community Learning Initiative<strong>Gallatin</strong>’s Community Learning Initiative (CLI) bridges the gap between the classroom andthe outside world by creating partnerships with community-based organizations, groupsand individuals—as well as other NYU programs—in addressing real-world problems anddevising and implementing practical solutions. For many CLI courses, students engage ingroup community projects as part <strong>of</strong> their course work and receive academic credit bothfor their engagement and reflection on the work.The Literacy ProjectThe <strong>Gallatin</strong> Writing Program’s Literacy Project, through a Literacy in Action course(cosponsored by <strong>Gallatin</strong>’s Community Learning Initiative), educates and supervises studentvolunteers who tutor adults in reading and writing at five partner sites.The LiteracyProject also sponsors a weekly writing class at one <strong>of</strong> the sites; publishes The LiteracyReview, an annual journal <strong>of</strong> the best writing from programs in adult literacy and Englishfor Speakers <strong>of</strong> Other Languages throughout <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> City; and sponsors the annual daylongLiteracy Review Workshops in Teaching Writing to Adult Basic Education, GED andESOL Students.
