He has received research fellowshipsfrom the Fulbright Program, the Dibner Institute and the Max Planck Institute for theHistory of Science, and been a visiting scholar at Columbia University and University ofOslo. He is the author of From Bauhaus to Ecohouse:A History of Ecological Design (LouisianaState University Press, 2010), which explores the intersection of architecture and ecologicalscience, and Imperial Ecology: Environmental Order of the British Empire, 1895-1945 (HarvardUniversity Press, 2001), which investigates how the promising new science of ecology flourishedin the British Empire. Professor Anker’s current book project explores the history ofecological debates in his country of birth, Norway. His scholarly works include The Poetics of the Obscene: Ibnal-Hajjaj and Sukhf (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2013) and numerous essays on the poetry of MahmoudDarwish, Sargon Boulus and on contemporary Iraqi culture. His essays and creativewritings in Arabic have appeared in major journals and publications in the Arab world and inNewYork Times,Aljazeera.net,The Nation, Middle East Report, Journal of Palestine Studies, Journalof Arabic Literature,The Massachusetts Review,World LiteratureToday, Ploughshares, and WashingtonSquare Journal. He has published two collections of poetry in Arabic and one collection inEnglish: The Baghdad Blues (Harbor Mountain Press, 2007). He has published three novels:I`jaam:An Iraqi Rhapsody (City Lights,2007) which has appeared in German,Portuguese,Norwegianand Italian editions; The Pomegranate Alone (2010), forthcoming fromYale UniversityPress in 2013;and Ya Maryam (Beirut:Dar al-Jamal,2012).His translations from the Arabic includeMahmoud Darwish’s In the Presence of Absence (Archipelago, 2011) and a selection ofIraqi poet SaadiYoussef’s work, Nostalgia;My Enemy (Graywolf,2012). He is a member of theEditorial Review Board of the Arab Studies Journal and co-founder and co-editor of the culturalpage of Jadaliyya. In spring 2013 he will be a fellow of the American Academy in Berlin.Gene CittadinoClinical Assistant ProfessorB.A. 1968, Knox College; M.S. 1974, Michigan State; M.A. 1977, Ph.D. 1981,WisconsinGene Cittadino’s main teaching and research interests lie in understanding and interpretingthe historical and present role of scientific knowledge in our culture. He was trained broadlyin the history of science, philosophy, history and the natural sciences, especially ecology andevolutionary biology. His courses explore the intellectual, social and cultural contexts of thegeneration and uses of scientific knowledge.Before coming to NYU,he taught or held researchpositions at Harvard University, Brandeis University, the University of California at Berkeley,the University of Wisconsin, MIT and SUNY Potsdam. He is the author of Nature as theLaboratory,a study of the influence of Darwinism and colonialism on early ecological researchin Germany, and he is currently completing a book on the history of ecology. Professor Cittadinohas received fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities,the American Council of Learned Societies, MIT and the National Science Foundation. Hiscurrent research project involves a study of resource policy,Native American rights and the useof environmental scientists as experts in an early 20th-century legal dispute over valuable oilland.Over the past several years,he has been involved in workshops,symposia and conferencesaimed at understanding the interaction of science and cultural values in the shaping of environmentalpolicy.Nina CornyetzAssociate ProfessorB.A. 1980, CUNY (Graduate Center); M.A. 1987, Ph.D. 1991, ColumbiaNina Cornyetz’s teaching and research interests include critical,literary and filmic theory;intellectualhistory; studies of gender and sexuality; and cultural studies, with a specialization inJapan. She has been the recipient of research fellowships from the Center for the CriticalAnalysis of Contemporary Culture, Rutgers University (1997-1998); the Japan Foundation(1995-1996); and the Now Foundation,Tokyo, Japan (1990). Among her publications areThe Ethics of Aesthetics in Japanese Cinema and Literature: Polygraphic Desire (Routledge, 2007);Dangerous Women, Deadly Words: Phallic Fantasy and Modernity in Three Japanese Writers(Stanford University Press, 1999); “Fetishized Blackness: Hip Hop and Racial Desire inContemporary Japan” in Social Text; and “Gazing Disinterestedly: Politicized Poetics inDouble Suicide” in Differences.
