NEW YORK UNIVERSITYGRADESThe following is a list of grades asthey appear on students’ academicrecords and their value in determiningthe grade point average (GPA):A = 4.0A- = 3.7B+ = 3.3B = 3.0B- = 2.7C+ = 2.3C = 2.0C- = 1.7D+ = 1.3D = 1.0F = 0.0 (failing)In addition, several grades haveno value and do not affect thegrade point average:P (passing work in apass/fail course)I (incomplete work)W (withdrawal fromcourse)N (not counted)*** (no grade submitted)“Eligibility for Financial Aid,” page 115, or visit theWeb site of the Office ofFinancial Aid at www.nyu.edu/financial.aid.Incomplete (I)The grade of I (Incomplete) is a temporary grade that indicates that the studenthas, for good reason, not completed all of the course work but thatthere is a possibility that he or she will pass the course when all the requirementshave been met.The student must request an incomplete from theinstructor before the grades are due; it is not awarded automatically. If thewritten request is not made, the instructor will submit a final grade based onwork completed to that point. If the instructor grants the request, the studentmust complete the necessary work by the date specified by the instructor. For Gallatin courses, this date can be no later than the end of classesin the following term (i.e., by the end of the spring term for a fall or Januarycourse or by the end of the fall term for a spring or summer course).Forcourses offered by other NYU schools, students should confer with the departmentto confirm the duration of a grade of I (incomplete). This deadlinewill apply even to students who maintain matriculation the followingterm.Extensions of these deadlines are rarely granted and must be requestedin writing before the final work is due; the extensions must be approved bythe course instructor and the Deans’Office. If the required work is not completedby the final deadline, the temporary grade of I will become an F,which will be computed into the student’s grade point average. This F willnot be removed from the transcript under any circumstances. For courses taken outside of Gallatin, students should consult theappropriate bulletin to ascertain the policy of that school or departmentregarding the time limit on incomplete grades.Students receiving financial aid: Grades of incomplete can negatively affecta student’s satisfactory academic progress required for aid eligibility. Formore information, students should refer to “Eligibility for Financial Aid,”page 115, or visit the Web site of the Office of Financial Aid at www.nyu.edu/financial.aid.Pass/Fail Grades (P/F)Graduate students may not choose to take a course that is given for a letter grade on apass/fail basis. However, several Gallatin courses must be taken on a pass/fail basis: privatelessons, Master’s Thesis Seminar, Master’s Thesis and Defense and Thesis Advisement. Allother University and Gallatin courses, as well as independent studies, tutorials and internships, are graded and may not be taken pass/fail unless the course is offered on a pass/failbasis only.98 NewYork University Bulletin 2012-2013
