He was named Researcher <strong>of</strong> the Year by the National Society for ExperientialEducation in 2004, has given invited talks on experiential learning at such schools as WilliamsCollege, Princeton <strong>University</strong> and Queens College, and twice was the keynote speaker at theMartha’sVineyard Institute on Experiential Education.His <strong>Gallatin</strong> courses have focused on theconcepts <strong>of</strong> community, learning, experience and everyday life, as well as on research methodsand the history <strong>of</strong> social thought. He is one <strong>of</strong> the organizers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gallatin</strong>’s Community LearningInitiative,and he served for more than five years as the associate dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>School</strong>.Sara MurphyClinical Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essorB.A. 1984, Sarah Lawrence College; M.A. 1988, Ph.D. 1997, <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong>Sara Murphy’s research and teaching interests include literature and philosophy,critical theory,feminist and gender studies and 19th-century literary cultures.Her <strong>Gallatin</strong> courses haveincluded “Literary and CulturalTheory;”“Sex, Gender, Nature, Culture; and Gender, Sexuality,and Self-Representation,” as well as courses in romanticism and the 19th-century and20th-century novel. She has also taught at Rutgers, SUNY Albany,<strong>York</strong> College at the City<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong>, and NYU’s General Studies Program. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Murphy’s currentprojects include an exploration <strong>of</strong> the concept <strong>of</strong> consent in literature and political theory anda collection <strong>of</strong> essays on the representation <strong>of</strong> sexual violence in law and culture. Her workappears in such publications as Hypatia; Signs: Journal <strong>of</strong>Women in Culture and Society; Philosophy& Social Criticism; Studies in Law, Politics and Society;The Oxford Encyclopedia <strong>of</strong> Women inWorld History; Feminists Contest Politics and Philosophy; and a/b:Auto/Biography Studies, as wellas several forthcoming essay collections. Her research has been supported by the NationalEndowment for the Humanities and the NYU Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship, among others.In 2003, she received the <strong>Gallatin</strong> Adviser <strong>of</strong> Distinction Award and in 2011 the <strong>Gallatin</strong>Excellence in Teaching Award.Vasuki NesiahAssociate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> PracticeB.A. 1990, Cornell; J.D. 1993, S.J.D. 2000, Harvard Law <strong>School</strong>Vasuki Nesiah is a legal scholar with a focus on public international law. Currently her mainareas <strong>of</strong> research include the law and politics <strong>of</strong> international human rights and humanitarianism,with a particular focus on transitional justice. Her past publications have engaged withdifferent dimensions <strong>of</strong> public international law, including human rights and humanitarianlaw, the international legal history <strong>of</strong> colonialism and international feminisms. She has alsowritten on the politics <strong>of</strong> memory and comparative constitutionalism, with a particular focuson law and politics in South Asia. Prior to joining <strong>Gallatin</strong> she taught in the InternationalRelations and Gender Studies concentrations at Brown <strong>University</strong> where she also served as<strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Bulletin</strong> 2012-2013 39
