GALLATIN SCHOOL OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDYscholars and teachers.While <strong>Gallatin</strong> students must comply with each school’s policies aboutprerequisites and requirements, including restrictions in particular programs, the opportunityto take courses throughout the <strong>University</strong> enables them to develop a unique, interdisciplinaryprogram <strong>of</strong> study.BEYOND THE CLASSROOMIndependent Study and Tutorials<strong>Gallatin</strong> students are encouraged to design their own independent studies in which theywork individually with an NYU pr<strong>of</strong>essor on a research project. Ideas for independent studiestypically follow from questions raised in a particular course.Tutorials are small groups <strong>of</strong> students working closely with an instructor on a commontopic, project or skill. Students in the group generally follow a prearranged syllabus detailingdiscussion topics, readings, assignments and written work.InternshipsExperiential learning is a key part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Gallatin</strong> curriculum, and <strong>Gallatin</strong> provides an extensivelist <strong>of</strong> available placements in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> areas such as business, education,journalism, film and the arts. Students may also develop their own internships, subject to theapproval <strong>of</strong> their advisers and the director <strong>of</strong> external programs.Private LessonsPrivate lessons allow students to receive academic credit for their studies at selected performingor visual arts studios in the <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> area.Dancers,artists,singers,musicians and actors are thusable to study outside <strong>of</strong> NYU with some <strong>of</strong> the city’s great artists, performers and teachers.Course Equivalency CreditThrough course equivalency, students are given the opportunity to earn credit for previouslearning experiences, such as pr<strong>of</strong>essional, creative, volunteer or other work experience.Toapply for these credits, students must demonstrate that they have mastered material equivalentto that covered in actual courses <strong>of</strong>fered at <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Co-CurricularOpportunitiesWRITING PROGRAM<strong>Gallatin</strong>’s Writing Program expands opportunities for studying writing, engages students ina variety <strong>of</strong> experiential and individualized modes <strong>of</strong> learning, and focuses writing across,as well as at the center <strong>of</strong>, <strong>Gallatin</strong>’s curriculum.TheWriting Program sponsors conferencesand readings by faculty, students and guests and aWriting Center that employs students, andpublishes an annual journal <strong>of</strong> student writing and visual art, the <strong>Gallatin</strong> Review.
