Frances White is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History and Black Studies at <strong>Gallatin</strong> and the Department<strong>of</strong> Social and Cultural Analysis in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts and Science. She has served as NYU’sVice Provost for Faculty Development from 2005 to 2008 and Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>School</strong>from 1998 to 2005. She has been awarded fellowships from the Danforth Foundation, theMellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities,among others.She hasalso been a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Sierra Leone and the Gambia. Before comingto NYU,she taught at Fourah Bay College <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sierra Leone and at HampshireCollege. Her awards include the Catherine T. and John D. MacArthur Chair in History(1985-1988) and the Letitia Brown Memorial Publication Prize for the best book on blackwomen (1987). Her teaching and research interests include the history <strong>of</strong> Africa and its diaspora,history <strong>of</strong> gender and sexuality and critical race theory. Her books include Sierra Leone’sSettler Women Traders, Women in Sub-Saharan Africa and Dark Continent <strong>of</strong> Our Bodies. She is atwork on a book about Afro-British Cultural Studies.Susanne L.W<strong>of</strong>fordPr<strong>of</strong>essorB.A. 1973,Yale College; B.Phil. 1977, Oxford; Ph.D. 1982,YaleSusanne L.W<strong>of</strong>ford is the Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Before coming to <strong>Gallatin</strong>, Pr<strong>of</strong>essorW<strong>of</strong>ford taught atYale <strong>University</strong> and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin (Madison), where sheserved as Director <strong>of</strong> the Center for the Humanities and as the Mark Eccles Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong>English, having formerly been Chair <strong>of</strong> the Divisional Committee for Arts and Humanitiesand Director <strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies in English. She has been a member <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> theBread Loaf <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> English since 1989 and was aVisiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Harvard <strong>University</strong>and Princeton <strong>University</strong>.A distinguished scholar <strong>of</strong> epic poetry and <strong>of</strong> Renaissance and earlymodern literature,Pr<strong>of</strong>essorW<strong>of</strong>ford is the recipient <strong>of</strong> many prizes and honors,including the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching; the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>Wisconsin Romnes Fellowship; the Hilldale Award for Collaborative Research, UW-Madison;the Robert Frost Chair at the Bread Loaf <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> English;the Isabel MacCaffrey Prize(awarded by the Spenser Society);theWilliam Cline Devane Medal for DistinguishedTeachingatYale <strong>University</strong>; the Sarai Ribic<strong>of</strong>f Award for the Encouragement <strong>of</strong> Teaching inYaleCollege; and theYale College-Sidonie Miskimin Clauss Prize forTeaching Excellence in theHumanities. She was also appointed to the Charles B. G. Murphy Chair while at Yale.As agraduate student, won a Mellon Fellowship, a Whiting Fellowship, a Danforth Fellowshipand a Marshall Scholarship.
