He was the inaugural Dibner Family Professor of the Historyand Philosophy of Science andTechnology of Polytechnic Institute of NYU from 2007-2012.He currently serves as the Director of Science and Society,a new inter-school minor at NYU.His research interests include molecular biology and intellectual property in Europe and theU.S., genetic privacy issues, and the history of 18th- and 19th-century German physics. ProfessorJackson received his Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of science from the Universityof Cambridge. Before coming to NYU, he taught at Harvard University, the University ofPennsylvania, and the University of Chicago. He has been a senior fellow of the Dibner Institutefor the History of Science andTechnology at MIT and the Max-Planck-Institute for theHistory of Science in Berlin. He has published more than 40 articles, book chapters, and encyclopediaentries on the history of science and technology from the Scientific Revolution tothe present.His first book,Spectrum of Belief: Joseph von Fraunhofer and the Craft of Precision Optics(MIT Press, 2000) received the Paul Bunge Prize from the German Chemical Society forthe Best Work on Instrument Makers and the Hans Sauer Prize for the Best Work on theNewYork University Bulletin 2012-2013 33

His second book, Harmonious Triads:Physicists, Musicians and Instrument Markers in Nineteenth-Century Germany (MIT Press),was releasedin 2006 with the paperback edition appearing in 2008. Professor Jackson received theFrancis Bacon Prize for Contributions to the History of Science and Technology fromCaltech, where he served as the Francis BaconVisiting Professor of History during the winterand spring terms of 2012. He has won teaching awards from Harvard and the Universityof Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Erfurt Academy of Sciences in Germany, and theGerman National Academy of Sciences-Leopoldina.He is currently finishing up a manuscripttentatively titled “The Biography of a Gene: Patents, HIV/AIDS, and Race” and is co-editinga forthcoming volume Music, Sound, and the Laboratory from 1750 to 1980, for the History ofScience Society’sYearbook, Osiris, with the University of Chicago Press.Mitchell JoachimClinical Associate ProfessorB.P.S. 1994, SUNY (Buffalo); M.Arch. 1997, Columbia; M.A.U.D. 2002, Harvard; Ph.D. 2006,Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyDr. Joachim is a leader in ecological design, architecture, and urbanism. He is the foundingCo-President atTerreform ONE and Partner at Planetary ONE. Previously he was the FrankGehry Chair at the University of Toronto and served on the faculty at Pratt, Columbia,Syracuse,Washington and Parsons. He was formerly an architect at Gehry Partners, and PeiCobb Freed.He is aTED Senior Fellow and has been awarded fellowships with Moshe Safdieand Martin Society for Sustainability, MIT. He won the Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainabilityand Humanity, History Channel and Infiniti Award for City of the Future, and TimeMagazine Best Invention of 2007 with MIT Smart Cities. His project, FabTree Hab, has beenexhibited at MoMA and widely published.
