NEW YORK UNIVERSITYMatriculation PolicyStudents must be matriculated at the time they defend the thesis.That is,students must be registeredfor Master’s Thesis and Defense, or if they did not successfully defend the thesis duringthe term in which they registered for Master’s Thesis and Defense, they must then register forthe 1-unit course entitled “Thesis Advisement” (CORE-GG2340) each term (including thesummer, if they plan on graduating in September) until they have successfully defended thethesis. Students should note that this 1-unit course is not included in the 40-unit requirementfor the master’s degree and it has a special tuition rate ($400 plus a nonrefundable registrationand services fee). Students may not maintain matriculation after completing 37 units. Rather,they must enroll in Master’sThesis and Defense or, when appropriate,Thesis Advisement.Students who defend in time for January graduation do not need to matriculate in the springsemester. Students who defend in time for September graduation do not need to matriculatein the fall term but do need to matriculate in the summer term.Please note:only students whowill defend for September graduation are required to matriculate in the summer term.THESIS APPROVAL PROCESSOnce the thesis proposal has been approved,the student should consult regularly with the adviserand, if possible, the other members <strong>of</strong> the thesis defense committee. During this period,the student should clarify ideas or approaches and submit drafts <strong>of</strong> chapters for feedback.When the thesis has been completed, the student should submit a copy to the adviser forreview no less than ten weeks before the anticipated defense date. Once the thesis has beenapproved by the adviser, the student should submit the final draft <strong>of</strong> the thesis on the <strong>Gallatin</strong>Web site no less than four weeks before the defense date; the adviser-approved draft will beforwarded to the second and third readers, as well as to the <strong>School</strong>. Students conducting anartistic thesis that entails a performance must arrange to have the thesis committee memberssee the performance no less than one week before the defense date.Members <strong>of</strong> the thesis committee will read the thesis before the defense, but generally willnot provide feedback unless substantial revisions are required. If the student cannot make therequested revisions quickly enough, the defense date may be postponed.Formal approval <strong>of</strong> the thesis will occur at the defense. Please note that it is also not unusualfor the thesis committee to approve the thesis at the defense but still require revisionsto the thesis (which the student will have 30 days to complete).THE THESIS DEFENSEAt least four weeks before the anticipated defense date, the student negotiates a specific dateand time with the three members <strong>of</strong> the committee; when that agreement has been reached,the student registers for the defense on the <strong>Gallatin</strong>Web site.
