GALLATIN SCHOOL OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDYprovide a makeup examination for the student or require other work as a substitute. If themakeup examination cannot be completed by the end of the semester, the instructor maygive a grade of incomplete. Incompletes are not awarded automatically.VII. EXTERNAL STUDYA graduate student in academic good standing may be permitted to take credit-bearing graduate-levelcourses at an institution other than NYU if the courses fit logically into his or her program.All such course work must be approved in advance by both the student’s primary adviserand the Gallatin Office of Global Programs.VIII. MAINTAINING MATRICULATIONAll students are required to be registered in every fall and spring semester from the time ofadmission until the degree is completed and the diploma is posted. If a student does not registerfor classes in a fall or spring term (provided the student has not yet registered for Master’sThesis and Defense; please see below for information about the registration procedurefollowing enrollment for Master’s Thesis and Defense when the thesis is not completed),then the student must register to maintain matriculation.This registration status allows studentsto maintain their eligibility to register for the following semester without applying forreadmission. Graduate students may maintain matriculation for a maximum of two semesters.Maintaining matriculation carries a fee of $75 per semester, plus a nonrefundable registrationand services fee. NEW YORK UNIVERSITYStudents may not register to maintain matriculation after they have registered for Master’sThesisand Defense.After registration for Master’sThesis and Defense, students must registerfor Thesis Advisement, a 1-unit course that is not included in the 40-unit requirementfor the master’s degree. (For more information about Thesis Advisement registration, seepage 78, Matriculation Policy.) Note that students who have been readmitted may not registerto maintain matriculation during their first semester back at Gallatin.While maintaining matriculation, a student may not attend another college or university,except when the student has received approval for external study (see above). Students arenot required to maintain matriculation during the summer sessions.Students who register to maintain matriculation are not considered full-time students andshould be aware that this registration status can affect their financial aid, health insurance andstudent housing. Students who maintain matriculation are not eligible for financial aid andmay be required to begin student loan repayment. Students who receive financial aid, includingloans, grants and scholarships, are therefore advised to contact the Office of FinancialAid before registering to maintain matriculation. Students enrolled in a parent’s orguardian’s health insurance plan should contact the insurance carrier directly for informationabout eligibility requirements; full-time standing is sometimes a condition of eligibility.Students who register to maintain matriculation are also not permitted to live in Universityhousing. Students planning to live in campus housing in the future should contactthe Department of Residential Life and Housing Services.IX. LEAVES OF ABSENCEA student may request a leave of absence through Gallatin’s Office of Student Affairs, eitherin person or in writing. Leaves may be granted for medical reasons, personal hardships, militaryservice or other like situations and are generally for no longer than two consecutivesemesters.When a leave is granted, the student is not required to maintain matriculation; norwill the student be required to apply for readmission so long as he or she returns to theSchool within the specified time. Students on leave are required to meet all financial aid andhousing deadlines, and they may be eligible to purchase NYU health insurance.While onleave, a student may not attend another college or university and may not access NewYorkUniversity facilities unless written permission from the Associate Dean of Students or a representativehas been issued. A student on a medical leave of absence is subject to proceduresfor submitting documentation prior to return. If a student is on probation when a leave isgranted, the student returns to the School on probation.A student may not be granted a leave of absence during the first semester of enrollmentin Gallatin.
