She also holds an M.A. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia.Her book manuscript on the “Children <strong>of</strong> Empire,” is a study <strong>of</strong> second- and third-generationJapanese colonists in Korea in the 1870s-1940s and their turbulent repatriation to theJapanese metropole in the aftermath <strong>of</strong> WWII. It explores the remapping <strong>of</strong> boundaries,identity and notions <strong>of</strong> national belonging that accompanied the abrupt and <strong>of</strong>ten violenttransition from the colonial to the postcolonial world.Her research and teaching interests includesocial history, colonialism and imperialism, and war and memory. She is teaching“Memory Wars: Japanese Representations <strong>of</strong> WWII.” Prior to <strong>Gallatin</strong>, she taught atColumbia <strong>University</strong> andYale <strong>University</strong>.Gail DrakesSophomore Class AdviserB.A. 1994, Oberlin College; M.A. 1999, Michigan (Ann Arbor); M.A. 2003, M.Phil. 2009, <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong>Gail Drakes is an interdisciplinary scholar with graduate degrees from the history departmentat the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan,Ann Arbor,and the Program in American Studies at NYU.Her current teaching and research interests focus on the cultural implications <strong>of</strong> intellectualproperty law and African-American historical memory. She has held administrative positionsat Columbia <strong>University</strong> and CUNY and has taught courses in U.S. history, media studies,Asian/Pacific/American Studies and African-American studies.
