NEW YORK UNIVERSITYMaster <strong>of</strong> ArtsDegreeRequirementsUNDERSTANDING YOUR DEGREE REQUIREMENTSThe majority <strong>of</strong> the student’s program is self-selected.There are, however, certain basic structuralrequirements. Regardless <strong>of</strong> their concentration, all <strong>Gallatin</strong> students earn the samedegree: a Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in <strong>Individualized</strong> Study.Total UnitsTo be eligible for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts degree, students must complete 40 units within sixyears <strong>of</strong> matriculating in <strong>Gallatin</strong>. Students may not exceed the required number <strong>of</strong> units forthe degree, and all courses must be taken at the graduate level.Graduate CoreAll students are required to take five <strong>Gallatin</strong> courses: one <strong>of</strong> the proseminars; a <strong>Gallatin</strong>graduate course, the Thesis Proposal Seminar; Master’s Thesis I and Master’s Thesis II. Formore information about these courses, see pages 75-79.ElectivesStudents complete 26 units in elective courses <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>Gallatin</strong> or other NYU schools,or <strong>Gallatin</strong> individualized projects. <strong>Gallatin</strong> students may take courses throughout the graduatedegree-granting programs <strong>of</strong> NYU as listed on page 69 <strong>of</strong> the 2012-13 <strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>Bulletin</strong>.It should be noted that some courses have prerequisites, and others may be limited tostudents in their respective departments. Graduate students will not receive credit for undergraduatecourse work, with the exception <strong>of</strong> certain courses in the department <strong>of</strong> UndergraduateFilm and Television as explained in the 2012-13 <strong>Gallatin</strong> <strong>Bulletin</strong>.OTHER REQUIREMENTSMaster’s ThesisThe culmination <strong>of</strong> the student’s work at <strong>Gallatin</strong> is the master’s thesis. For information regardingthe thesis requirements, see pages 75-79.Academic Good StandingStudents must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0 (B) to remain inacademic good standing, and a final minimum cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0 is requiredfor graduation. For more information about academic good standing, see page 100.Please note:Academic good standing is not the same as satisfactory academic progress.Satisfactoryacademic progress refers to the number <strong>of</strong> units a student must complete in a giventime period to maintain eligibility for financial aid.
