A small company with rigorous standards formodern design,the firm’s award-winning work includes commercial,institutional and residentialprojects,as well as custom furniture. Specht Harpman was recognized in Wallpaper magazine’sArchitects’Directory as one <strong>of</strong> the“top 50 up-and-coming architectural practices from around theworld.”The firm has received four Honor Awards from the American Institute <strong>of</strong> Architects andwon the “EmergingVoices” competition sponsored by the Architectural League <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong>.Twice a finalist in the prestigious PS1/MoMA “warm up” competition, the firm’s designs werefeatured at the Museum <strong>of</strong> Modern Art’s Architecture and Design gallery. Specht Harpman wasnamed“Tastemakers”by House and Garden magazine and included as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> City’s“Top100”architects by <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong> Magazine.The firm’s solar-powered,<strong>of</strong>f-the-grid modular house,zeroHouse,has won several design awards and has been published in more than 40 internationalbooks and magazines. Louise Harpman maintains a commitment to teaching as well as practice.She taught at theYale <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Architecture for eight years, where she was the Studio Coordinatorfor the hallmarkYale Building Project and the Chair <strong>of</strong> theAdmissions Committee.She leftYale to become Associate Dean at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Texas at Austin, where she also held theHarwell Hamilton Harris fellowship in architecture and served as the Director <strong>of</strong> the Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalResidency Program.While atTexas, she founded the DesignBuildTexas studio program, thoughwhich her students designed and built an affordable,energy-efficient house prototype,which wasfeatured at the United States Green Building Conference and the AIA National Convention.At<strong>Gallatin</strong>,she teaches an advancedArchitecture and Urban Design LAB course,an introductory designcourse called Good Design, and a graduate course in urban design at the Robert F.Wagner<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Public Service, where she is an Associate Faculty member.Karen HornickClinical Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essorB.A. 1979, Chicago; M.A. 1981, M.Phil. 1984, Ph.D. 2000, ColumbiaKaren Hornick teaches courses that integrate the study <strong>of</strong> literature, media, philosophy, culturalhistory and writing. At <strong>Gallatin</strong>, she has taught writing seminars and interdisciplinaryseminars on gender and feminist theory, modern cultural history and popular culture theory,and most summers she teaches a Study Abroad class on culture and history in Berlin.Trainedas aVictorianist, she is currently working on problems regarding serial narrativity and popularaesthetics, particularly in relation to the poetics <strong>of</strong> television.
