MTU—maximum transmission unit. Maximum packet size, in bytes, that a particular interface canhandle.NNI—Network-to-Network Interface. ATM Forum standard that defines the interface between two ATMswitches that are both located in a private network or are both located in a public network. The UNIstandard defines the interface between a public switch and a private one. Also, the standard interfacebetween two Frame Relay switches meeting the same criteria.PE—Provider edge router providing Frame Relay over L2TPv3 functionality.PPP—Point-to-Point Protocol. A link-layer encapsulation method for dialup or dedicated circuits. Asuccessor to Serial Line IP (SLIP), PPP provides router-to-router and host-to-network connections oversynchronous and asynchronous circuits.PVC—permanent virtual circuit. A virtual circuit that is permanently established. A Frame Relay logicallink, whose endpoints and class of service are defined by network management. Analogous to an X.25permanent virtual circuit, a PVC consists of the originating Frame Relay network element address, originating data-link control identifier, terminating Frame Relay network element address, andtermination data-link control identifier. Originating refers to the access interface from which the PVC isinitiated. Terminating refers to the access interface at which the PVC stops. Many data networkcustomers require a PVC between two points. PVCs save bandwidth associated with circuitestablishment and tear down in situations where certain virtual circuits must exist all the time. Dataterminating equipment with a need for continuous communication uses PVCs.PW—pseudowire.SNMP—Simple Network Management Protocol. Network management protocol used almostexclusively in TCP/IP networks. SNMP provides a means to monitor and control network devices, andto manage configurations, statistics collection, performance, and security.tunneling—Architecture that is designed to provide the services necessary to implement any standardpoint-to-point encapsulation scheme.UNI—User-Network Interface.UTI—Universal Transport Interface.VPDN—virtual private dialup network. A network that allows separate and autonomous protocoldomains to share common access infrastructure, including modems, access servers, and ISDN routers.A VPDN enables users to configure secure networks that take advantage of ISPs that tunnel remoteaccess traffic through the ISP cloud.WAN—wide-area network. Data communications network that serves users across a broad geographicarea and often uses transmission devices provided by common carriers. Frame Relay, SMDS, and X.25are examples of WANs.117
