SanitationStrategic Objectives: Provide universal access to high quality sanitationIntended outcome: all household to have access to sanitationDue to its rural character the provision of basic sanitation has been one of the major challenges faced by the <strong>Nkomazi</strong> <strong>Local</strong><strong>Municipality</strong>. Since <strong>20</strong>04 the municipality has been engaged in various projects to provide basic sanitation systems in the form of VIPtoilets mostly in the rural villages where the need is highest. As outlined in the Table <strong>and</strong> Figure below, in <strong>20</strong>01 about 7.5% of thehouseholds had access to flush toilets connected to a sewer system. In <strong>20</strong>01 about 28.0% households had access to pit latrines withventilation pipes (VIP) <strong>and</strong> by <strong>20</strong>07 the situation improved to 35.8%. In <strong>20</strong>01 30.1% had Pit latrines without ventilation <strong>and</strong> in <strong>20</strong>07the situation improved to 0.1%.
