Electrification of HouseholdsStrategic Objectives: To provide access to high quality electricityIntended outcome: all Households having access to electricityThe backlog in the provision of electricity to households (household connections) is still huge <strong>and</strong> increasing at an alarming rate dueto the uncontrolled expansion of the rural villages. Since <strong>20</strong>01 the <strong>Municipality</strong> through the Department of Minerals <strong>and</strong> Energy <strong>and</strong>Eskom has been engaged in various projects to provide electricity to all households in all the settlements. Electricity is mainly needfor cooking <strong>and</strong> lighting. As shown in the Table <strong>and</strong> Figure below, in <strong>20</strong>01 26.2% of the households used electricity for cooking <strong>and</strong> by<strong>20</strong>07 the situation improved to 44.1%. In <strong>20</strong>01 54.6% <strong>and</strong> 13.6% used wood <strong>and</strong> paraffin respectively. In <strong>20</strong>07 the use of wood <strong>and</strong>paraffin dropped to 41.2% <strong>and</strong> 6.1% respectively. Based on the electrification programme of the <strong>Municipality</strong> together with DME theelectricity backlog in terms of household connections st<strong>and</strong>s at 36 247 households of which 35 811 will be addressed by <strong>20</strong>12. Thereare areas where Eskom provides with electricity <strong>and</strong> proclaimed areas are supplied by the <strong>Municipality</strong>. The municipality do providefree basic electricity to member of communities who qualifies for free basic services.
