Environment and ProgressiveRestorationRestorationEnvironmental Bondpit slope varies in-between 70 to 85 0 .Bench heights were maintained between 9 to 32meters.Some bench widths were maintained at 2.5meterswhereas others were missing.Top soil was not stored separately but it was disposedalong with the overburden. The overburden generation was very high. Overburdenwas disposed downhill in an identified waste dumpyardin the pit plan.Check dam made out of gabion wall was constructed atthe base of the dump-yard.Overburdens were washed down causing siltationproblem of Khanarbarti-Kharikhola basin and rise inriver bed.Pit slope was between 65 to 80 0 and there was nobenching. The height of the overburden dumped wasabout 30 meters. The progressive restoration was focused only onconstruction of check dam. There is no afforestation carried out in the mine.Environment Bond deposited Nu. 3,00,000.07. Others A slide has occurred on the top of the ridge. A villagelies just below the ridge and the nearest house wasabout 35meters.In-order to prevent further sliding of ridge from thetop, the check dam (gabion wall) measuring 72 meterin length and breadth of 5.4 was under construction.A newly constructed farm road passes below the mine.Waste dump-yard was located above the farm road.Overburden spills into Kharikhola basin, which passesthrough the mine.1.11 RecommendationThe management has to construct uniform benches and widths as mentioned in the FMFSand EMP including waste dump-yard.The management has to continue the construction of the check dam till the top of the ridgeto ensure the safety of the village on the top.Restoration work was not carried out at the mine-out area. The management has to carryout restoration activities for those mine-out areas, instead of letting up to the nature forregeneration. The management has to develop proper channeling of mine water in the mining area beforethe onset of monsoon. The management has to provide drinking water, sanitation facilities and first-aid –kit forthe workers at the site.39
