Geerza and Dojim Stone QuarryGeerza and Dojim stone quarries measuring 40.02 hectares had been leased out to M/s BhutanStone and Aggregate Factory. Dojim stone quarry is currently not operating. However, thereis no water supply and toilet at the quarry.Overburdens and interburdens were pushed downhill butinto the area below the quarry which the managementreported as the approved waste dump. However, in theabsence of a complete FMFS report, it could not be verified.A small concrete check dam has been constructed. Themanager, mines reported that as per the FMFS report, theyare required to construct a major check dam, 2440 metershigh and has been planned accordingly.Some overburdens were pushed downhill at areas other thanthe approved dump site.88

Others About 39 people are employed including the workers at thecrushing plant from which 9 are non-national workers.Water tanker is used for spraying water in the quarry whichis done at-least once a day.Channeling system for mine water is missing at thequarry/mining area.Drinking water is not available at the quarry.Since the approach road to the quarry and factory passesacross the stream which is just below the crushing plant it isaffected by vehicles passing across it.The stream is also affected by waste materials (soil/crushingdusts) from the crushing plant which are dumped downhill.The check dam constructed is filled up and the wastes havespilled over into the stream.1.34 RecommendationThe management should ensure that the quarry is operated strictly as per the FMFS report,EMP and environmental clearance at all times.The management should expedite the construction and repair of drains along the approachroad.The management should expedite construction of check dam at the waste disposal site.There is a need to minimize the impact on the downhill vegetation at the waste disposal sitewhich can be done by following load-haul-dump method for overburden managementinstead of pushing the wastes downhill.89
