One runs in<strong>to</strong> technical difficulties if one tries<strong>to</strong> implement the construction of the 2 + 1 gravity in this case. The main reason forthis is the fact that the constraint algebra does not close with structure constantsin the case of 3 + 1 gravity. 6 In order <strong>to</strong> circumvent this problem (see the chapterby Thiemann) Thiemann recently proposed <strong>to</strong> impose one single master constraintdefined as∫M = dx 3 S2 (x) − q ab V a (x)V b (x)√ , (15.19)det q(x)where q ab is the space metric and V a (x) is the vec<strong>to</strong>r constraint. Using techniquesdeveloped by Thiemann, this constraint can indeed be promoted <strong>to</strong> a quantumopera<strong>to</strong>r acting on H kin . (15.20)6 In 2 + 1 gravity the constraint algebra correspond <strong>to</strong> the Lie algebra of ISO(3) (isometries of Euclidean flatspacetime). There are no local degrees of freedom and the underlying gauge symmetry has a non-dynamicalstructure. In 3 + 1 gravity the presence of gravi<strong>to</strong>ns changes that. The fact that the constraint algebra closeswith structure functions means that the gauge symmetry structure is dynamical or field dependent. This is thekey difficulty in translating the simple results of 2 + 1in<strong>to</strong>3+ 1 dimensions.
