AppendicesAppendix I – Removal of <strong>asbestos</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dustthat is greater than ‘a m<strong>in</strong>or contam<strong>in</strong>ation’This appendix provides an example of how to perform a specific <strong>asbestos</strong> removal task.It does not address hazards other than <strong>asbestos</strong> (such as fall from heights or electricalhazards) – these hazards also need to be identified and the associated risk controlled.1. Obta<strong>in</strong> and review the <strong>asbestos</strong> register or any other relevant documentationrelat<strong>in</strong>g to the presence of <strong>asbestos</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dust (from the person whocommissioned the removal work).2. A class A-licensed removalist must perform the removal.3. Ensure a nom<strong>in</strong>ated supervisor is on site at all times when the removal is be<strong>in</strong>gperformed.4. Establish where the removal area will be and move all items out of the areaor cover them with 200 micron plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g if they could be contam<strong>in</strong>ateddur<strong>in</strong>g the removal work.5. Identify and isolate the removal area with appropriately placed durable signsand barricades us<strong>in</strong>g methods which may <strong>in</strong>clude temporary fenc<strong>in</strong>g, bollards,tape, rope or plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g. Ensure signs and barricades rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> place untila satisfactory visual <strong>in</strong>spection is completed.6. Put on personal protective equipment (PPE), <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g disposable coveralls withhood, boots and respirator. Preference needs to be given to boots without lacesas laced boots can be difficult to decontam<strong>in</strong>ate.7. The m<strong>in</strong>imum respiratory protection for this task is a half-face mask with a P1particulate cartridge or alternatively, a disposable P1 respirator provided thata proper fit can be assured. If there is any uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty regard<strong>in</strong>g respiratoryprotection, advice from a competent person (such as a hygienist) needs tobe obta<strong>in</strong>ed.8. Use damp cloths or an <strong>in</strong>dustrial vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filterto collect the <strong>asbestos</strong>-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dust.9. Place the waste <strong>in</strong>to a 200 micron plastic waste bag or suitable alternatewaste conta<strong>in</strong>er dedicated for <strong>asbestos</strong> waste that is clearly labelled withan appropriate warn<strong>in</strong>g sign <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>asbestos</strong> waste.10. Once all contam<strong>in</strong>ated dust, used rags and waste have been placed <strong>in</strong> wasteconta<strong>in</strong>ers and all tools have been cleaned, beg<strong>in</strong> the personal decontam<strong>in</strong>ationprocess.11. Carry out personal decontam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> a designated area. The method ofpersonal decontam<strong>in</strong>ation may vary. The follow<strong>in</strong>g is one method:• Clean the disposable coveralls and respirator while still wear<strong>in</strong>g them.Coveralls can be cleaned us<strong>in</strong>g a HEPA vacuum, damp rag or f<strong>in</strong>e waterspray and the respirator can be cleaned with a wet rag or cloth.• While still wear<strong>in</strong>g the respirator, remove coveralls turn<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong>side-outto entrap any rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ation and then place them <strong>in</strong>to an <strong>asbestos</strong>waste bag.• Remove the respirator. If a non-disposable respirator was used, <strong>in</strong>spect itto ensure it is free from contam<strong>in</strong>ation, clean it with a wet rag if necessary,then store <strong>in</strong> a conta<strong>in</strong>er.
