Additional requirements for licensed<strong>asbestos</strong> removal271. The clean decontam<strong>in</strong>ation area needs to <strong>in</strong>clude:• storage for <strong>in</strong>dividual respirators <strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ers or lockers• airflow towards the dirty decontam<strong>in</strong>ation area• shower area with an adequate supply of hot and cold water and toiletries.272. The clean chang<strong>in</strong>g area needs to <strong>in</strong>clude:• storage for clean cloth<strong>in</strong>g• separate storage for clean and dirty towels• airflow towards the clean decontam<strong>in</strong>ation area.273. All water from the decontam<strong>in</strong>ation facility needs to pass through a particulatefilter or other trap before it passes <strong>in</strong>to sewer ma<strong>in</strong>s. The filter or trap needsto be capable of captur<strong>in</strong>g particles down to five micron.274. Workers must not smoke, eat or dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> any part of the decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unit.Use of remote decontam<strong>in</strong>ation units275. Remote decontam<strong>in</strong>ation units are decontam<strong>in</strong>ation units not located next tothe <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area. They can only be used if a decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unitcannot be located immediately adjacent to the <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area.276. When a remote decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unit is to be used, the <strong>asbestos</strong>removalist would need to implement additional procedures to m<strong>in</strong>imise<strong>asbestos</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation. This may <strong>in</strong>clude wear<strong>in</strong>g double coveralls, partialdecontam<strong>in</strong>ation at the removal site (refer to page 36) and methods forthe connection and disconnection of air-l<strong>in</strong>e respirators.277. The route of access from the <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area to the decontam<strong>in</strong>ationunit needs to be suitably signposted and barricaded to restrict public access.278. Paraoccupational air monitor<strong>in</strong>g must be conducted <strong>in</strong> the immediate vic<strong>in</strong>ityof this access route and at other suitable locations outside the <strong>asbestos</strong>removal area.279. An isolated chang<strong>in</strong>g area needs to be attached to the <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area.Before employees enter this chang<strong>in</strong>g area, all obvious signs of <strong>asbestos</strong> dustneed to be removed from their protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>asbestos</strong> vacuumcleaner. The isolated chang<strong>in</strong>g area is then used to discard outer garments,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g coveralls and overshoes before employees can put on freshouter/protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g for the journey to the decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unit.280. Respiratory protection needs to be worn until the appropriate phase ofthe decontam<strong>in</strong>ation procedure with<strong>in</strong> the remote decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unit.Enter<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area281. Employees enter<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>asbestos</strong> removal area need to follow the procedure<strong>in</strong> paragraphs 282 to 284.282. Clean change area: Change <strong>in</strong>to clean work clothes and put on clean protectivecloth<strong>in</strong>g. Store any removed cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a dust-proof conta<strong>in</strong>er. Pass through theairlock <strong>in</strong>to the clean decontam<strong>in</strong>ation area.283. Clean decontam<strong>in</strong>ation area: Put on respirator. Check that it is work<strong>in</strong>gproperly and there is a good facial seal (ie fit check).
