AppendicesAppendix N – Removal of a small section of pipe lagg<strong>in</strong>gus<strong>in</strong>g a glove bagThis appendix provides an example of how to perform a specific <strong>asbestos</strong> removal task.It does not address hazards other than <strong>asbestos</strong> (such as fall from heights or electricalhazards) – these hazards also need to be identified and the associated risk controlled.Note: Glove bag removal work does not require paraoccupational air-monitor<strong>in</strong>g.1. Obta<strong>in</strong> and review the <strong>asbestos</strong> register (from the person who commissionedthe removal work).2. A class A-licensed removalist must perform the removal.3. Ensure a nom<strong>in</strong>ated supervisor is on site at all times when removalis be<strong>in</strong>g performed.4. Establish where the removal area will be and move all items out of the areaor cover then with plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g if they could be contam<strong>in</strong>ated dur<strong>in</strong>g theremoval work.5. Identify and isolate the removal area with appropriately placed durable signsand barricades us<strong>in</strong>g methods which may <strong>in</strong>clude temporary fenc<strong>in</strong>g, bollards,tape, rope or plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g. Ensure signs and barricades rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> place untila satisfactory visual <strong>in</strong>spection is achieved as part of the clearance certificate.6. Put on personal protective equipment <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g disposable coveralls with hood,boots and respirator. Preference needs to be given to boots without laces aslaced boots can be difficult to decontam<strong>in</strong>ate.7. The m<strong>in</strong>imum respiratory protection for this task is a half-face mask with a P1particulate cartridge or alternatively a disposable P1 respirator, provided thata proper fit can be assured.8. Ensure the plant and equipment has been made safe (eg pipework emptied,electrical supply isolated, equipment shut down).9. Set-up/attach glove bag and perform removal work as described <strong>in</strong> ‘Glovebag removal work’ on page 61.10. Beg<strong>in</strong> the personal decontam<strong>in</strong>ation process.11. Clean the disposable coveralls and respirator while still wear<strong>in</strong>g them. Coverallscan be cleaned us<strong>in</strong>g a HEPA vacuum, damp rag or f<strong>in</strong>e water spray and therespirator can be cleaned with a wet rag or cloth.12. While still wear<strong>in</strong>g the respirator, remove coveralls, turn<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong>side-outto entrap any rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ation and then place them <strong>in</strong>to an <strong>asbestos</strong>waste bag.13. Remove the respirator. If a non-disposable respirator was used, <strong>in</strong>spect it toensure it is free from contam<strong>in</strong>ation, clean it with a wet rag if necessary, thenstore <strong>in</strong> a conta<strong>in</strong>er. Disposable respirators do not require clean<strong>in</strong>g. They needto be placed <strong>in</strong>to an <strong>asbestos</strong> waste bag or waste conta<strong>in</strong>er dedicated for<strong>asbestos</strong> waste.14. Ensure all used rags are placed <strong>in</strong>to waste bags.15. Ensure all waste bags are goose-necked, the exterior cleaned then doublebagged and all waste conta<strong>in</strong>ers are sealed.
