Legislation that applies to <strong>asbestos</strong> removalAsbestos removal work that requires a licenceFriable <strong>asbestos</strong>44. Asbestos removal work <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g friable ACM must always be performed bya class A-licensed person or employees of a class A-licensed person.Non-friable <strong>asbestos</strong>45. Asbestos removal work <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g non-friable ACM must be performed bya class A or B-licensed person if:• the area of ACM to be removed exceeds 10 square metres <strong>in</strong> total, or• the total time over which <strong>asbestos</strong> removal work is performed <strong>in</strong> any periodof seven days exceeds one hour (this period is the cumulative total timethe <strong>asbestos</strong> removal work is carried out by all employees over a periodof seven days).Friable <strong>asbestos</strong>: Asbestos material which, when dry, can be crumbled,pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure; or as a result of awork process, may become such that it can be crumbled, pulverised orreduced to powder by hand pressure.Non-friable <strong>asbestos</strong>: When dry, non-friable <strong>asbestos</strong> cannot becrumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure.Types of licences46. An employer or self-employed person may be licensed to remove friable ornon-friable ACM or both. An employer or self-employed person may also belicensed to only remove a specific type of friable or non-friable ACM. In thiscase, the licence issued would restrict the holder to remov<strong>in</strong>g only that type ofACM (see Table 1).
