AppendicesAppendix O – Removal of friable <strong>asbestos</strong>-conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gfire retardant material from a large ceil<strong>in</strong>g spaceThis appendix provides an example of how to perform a specific <strong>asbestos</strong> removal task.It does not address hazards other than <strong>asbestos</strong> (such as fall from heights or electricalhazards) – these hazards also need to be identified and the associated risk controlled.1. Obta<strong>in</strong> and review the <strong>asbestos</strong> register (from the person who commissionedthe removal work).2. A class A-licensed removalist must perform the removal.3. Obta<strong>in</strong> as much <strong>in</strong>formation about the location and condition of the ACM aspossible. Review build<strong>in</strong>g plans, thoroughly <strong>in</strong>spect the area (with appropriatepersonal protective equipment), discuss the removal with a competent person,such as an occupational hygienist, and the person who has management orcontrol of the workplace to establish any facts that are not directly apparent.4. Develop the control plan <strong>in</strong> consultation with employees and a competentperson, such as an occupational hygienist, and the person who hasmanagement or control of the workplace.5. Establish the extent of the removal area and move all items out of the areaor cover them with 200 micron plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g if they could be contam<strong>in</strong>ateddur<strong>in</strong>g the removal work. If work on items, such as ceil<strong>in</strong>g tiles, will result<strong>in</strong> disturb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>asbestos</strong>, this should not take place until after the enclosureis established.6. In consultation with employees and a competent person, develop an enclosurethat allows smooth flow of air from the decontam<strong>in</strong>ation unit to the negativeair units. In construct<strong>in</strong>g the enclosure, pay particular attention to penetrationsthrough the floor and ceil<strong>in</strong>g/roof.7. Ensure the enclosure is satisfactorily smoke tested and air monitor<strong>in</strong>g hascommenced before beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the removal work.8. Ensure a nom<strong>in</strong>ated supervisor is on site at all times when the removalis be<strong>in</strong>g performed.9. Identify and isolate the removal area with appropriately placed durable signsand barricades us<strong>in</strong>g methods which may <strong>in</strong>clude temporary fenc<strong>in</strong>g, bollards,tape, rope or plastic sheet<strong>in</strong>g. The floor above and below will require isolationif there is a risk of <strong>asbestos</strong> fibres reach<strong>in</strong>g these areas. Ensure signs andbarricades rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> place until a satisfactory visual <strong>in</strong>spection is achievedas part of the clearance certificate.10. Put on personal protective equipment <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g disposable coveralls with hood,boots and respirator. Preference needs to be given to boots without laces aslaced boots can be difficult to decontam<strong>in</strong>ate.11. The m<strong>in</strong>imum respiratory protection for this task is a full-face mask with a P3particulate cartridge if the removal can be performed wet. Refer to Appendix Efor further guidance on select<strong>in</strong>g an appropriate respirator.12. Ensure all aircondition<strong>in</strong>g equipment has been shut and isolated/blankedfrom this area.13.
