Inthis section, household welfare is studied with respect to the source <strong>of</strong> householdlivelihood, ownership <strong>of</strong> selected household assets and utilities available to thehouseholds and poverty levels.68 percent <strong>of</strong> thehouseholdsdepended onsubsistencefarming8.4.1 Source <strong>of</strong> Household LivelihoodThe majority <strong>of</strong> the households (68 percent) depended on subsistence farming for alivelihood. About 22 percent <strong>of</strong> the households were dependent on employmentincome. While subsistence farming was more predominant in the rural areas (77percent), more than two thirds (70 percent) <strong>of</strong> the households in the urban areasdepended on employment income. Table A1.10 shows that the Northern region hadthe highest proportion <strong>of</strong> households living on subsistence farming while Centralregion had the lowest.93
