The 2002 Population and Housing CensusThere were nine ethnic groups with a population of over one million persons, and theycollectively constituted 69 percent of the indigenous population. The Baganda werethe largest single ethnic group (18 percent) followed by the Banyankole with (10.0percent). The dominance of the Baganda has been observed since the 1948 Census.Catholics were the largest religious group in Uganda with 42 percent of the totalpopulation while 37 percent of the population were of the the Anglicans/Church ofUganda beliefs. The Moslems came third with 12 percent. Christianity waspredominant being practiced by 85 percent of the population.32
