The 2002 Population and Housing <strong>Census</strong>There were nine ethnic groups with a population <strong>of</strong> over one million persons, and theycollectively constituted 69 percent <strong>of</strong> the indigenous population. The Baganda werethe largest single ethnic group (18 percent) followed by the Banyankole with (10.0percent). The dominance <strong>of</strong> the Baganda has been observed since the 1948 <strong>Census</strong>.Catholics were the largest religious group in <strong>Uganda</strong> with 42 percent <strong>of</strong> the totalpopulation while 37 percent <strong>of</strong> the population were <strong>of</strong> the the Anglicans/Church <strong>of</strong><strong>Uganda</strong> beliefs. The Moslems came third with 12 percent. Christianity waspredominant being practiced by 85 percent <strong>of</strong> the population.32
