<strong>Analytical</strong> <strong>Report</strong>Half <strong>of</strong> thecommunitiesacknowledgedexistence <strong>of</strong> childabuseThe 2002 census established whether child abandonment and mistreatment was verycommon, not common or did not exist at all. Table 9.12 reveals that 51% <strong>of</strong>communities (in the country) acknowledged existence <strong>of</strong> some level <strong>of</strong> childabandonment and mistreatment. The results show that very common incidences <strong>of</strong>abandonment and mistreatment were highest in communities in the Northern region(12 percent) and lowest in Central region (5.9 percent).9.2 The Young PeopleYoung people are defined as those who are in the stage <strong>of</strong> transition from childhood toadulthood. There are several operational sub-categories <strong>of</strong> young persons withspecial government programs in <strong>Uganda</strong>. These include adolescents (10 – 24Years/15-24 years), teenagers (13 – 19 Years), and youths (18 – 30 Years).9.2.1 Size and Sex Composition <strong>of</strong> the Young PeopleThe young population (10-30 years) grew from 3.7 million in 1969 to 10.3 million in2002, an increase <strong>of</strong> nearly 7 million over the 33 year period, representing an annualgrowth rate <strong>of</strong> 3.2 percent.Female youthsoutnumber theirmale counterparts.Table 9.13 gives the indicators <strong>of</strong> the different sub-groups from 1969 to 2002.
