The average household size for <strong>Uganda</strong>was 4.7 persons as indicated in Figure 3.1 below. This was close to the size observedfrom the previous censuses <strong>of</strong> 4.8 in 1991 and 4.7 in 1969. The stability in thehousehold size is a reflection <strong>of</strong> the stable fertility <strong>Uganda</strong> has experienced over thepast three decades. Among the regions, the average household size varied from 4.2in Central Region to 5.0 persons in Northern region. The average household size wassmallest in Kalangala district (2.6 persons) and largest in Nebbi district (5.5 persons)as indicated in Table A1.3.Educated personstend to havesmallerhouseholdsSome variations in average household size were observed by the demographic andsocio-economic characteristics <strong>of</strong> the household head as shown in Figure 3.1. Theaverage household size was larger in rural areas than in urban areas. The averagehousehold size varied with the education level <strong>of</strong> the household head. It ranged from6.9 persons in the household whose head had no education to only 1.6 persons wherethe household head had post-primary education.24
