The findings in Table 5.7show that the life expectancy at birth was 50.4 years. In comparison with previousestimates, the current findings suggest that there was a gain of 2.3 years in an 11-year period (1991 - 2002), while between 1969 to 1991, there was only a gain of 1.6years. Thedifference in behavior is a reflection of exposure to excessive mortality arising out ofthe civil strife in the country in the decade preceding the census.54
