Section 2Facilitator’s Guide1Adherence to Treatment for HIVthe groups will be asked to think about the things a person shouldconsider when making a decision about starting ART. Provide eachgroup with a sheet of flip chart paper. Ask Group One toidentify the advantages of starting ARV. Ask Group Twoto identify the challenges of starting ARV. Allow the groups10 minutes to discuss and write down their answers. Bring thegroups back together and review their responses. Make sure thefollowing responses are included :Advantages of ART• You can live longer and have a better quality of life.• You won’t get sick as often.• You will have more time to fulfill your dreams and goals.• If you have children, you will see them grow up and gothrough life.• You will have the opportunity to continue earning a livingbecause you are well.• You have more time to do things that you enjoy.Challenges of ART• ART is a lifelong treatment that must be taken every day at thesame time and in the same way.• In the beginning ART seems complicated.• Sometimes you have to adjust what you eat and when you eatit according to the drugs you take.• Some types of ART require that you take several pills each day.• Some types of ART may be harmful if taken with other drugs orduring pregnancy.32• ART can give side effects. Some of them will go away after a fewweeks, while others will need to be addressed by the health worker.
