Explain thatWhen the ART resistance of HIV in a person’s bodybecomes too strong we call this “treatment failure.”At this point the person will become sick again. Sometimes anew regimen of a different medicine can be provided that canbattle the HIV that is resistant to other drugs. However, thereare only a few drug regimens, so HIV can eventually becomeresistant to all drugs.5. If time allows, ask someone in the group to share howthey would explain resistance to someone who was about tostart ART.6. Conclude the session with the following key message :When a person living with HIV does not adhere, he/she will develop treatment failure and become sickagain. If a person who is on ARV medicines forgetsmore than two or more pills per month, there arechances that resistance will develop!42
