The MS Program<br />
Students completing this program will have<br />
demonstrated:<br />
understanding of the theoretical basis of<br />
kinesiology through oral and written communication<br />
the ability to read and make critical<br />
analysis of original research in kinesiology<br />
appropriate to their specialization<br />
understanding and appreciation of a variety<br />
of research methods including both<br />
qualitative and quantitative techniques employed<br />
in the various specializations in<br />
kinesiology<br />
the ability to design, implement, and defend<br />
a thesis based on their specialization.<br />
Prerequisites<br />
In addition to <strong>Humboldt</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> requirements,<br />
the Department of Kinesiology<br />
and Recreation Administration requires the<br />
following criteria be met for admission to the<br />
program as a classified graduate student:<br />
a bachelor’s degree from an accredited<br />
institution, or equivalent, and completion<br />
of courses in anatomy, physiology, exercise<br />
physiology, biomechanics, motor<br />
learning, and sport psychology with a<br />
grade of B- or better in each.<br />
a minimum undergraduate grade-point<br />
average (GPA) of 2.75 in the last 60<br />
semester units (a 3.0 GPA is preferred).<br />
completion of the Graduate Record<br />
Examination (GRE): minimum scores of<br />
425 on verbal, 425 on quantitative, and<br />
3.5 on the GRE writing component, must<br />
be submitted as part of the application<br />
process prior to admission.<br />
international students must achieve a<br />
minimum score of 600 on the written<br />
TOEFL (or 250 on the computerized<br />
TOEFL). The TOEFL standard must be<br />
completed prior to the admission to the<br />
graduate program.<br />
A student may be conditionally admitted to<br />
the program if:<br />
The undergraduate degree lacks one<br />
or more of the following courses: anatomy,<br />
physiology, exercise physiology,<br />
biomechanics, motor learning, and sport<br />
psychology. These courses must be<br />
satisfactorily completed with a grade of<br />
B- or better in each before enrollment in<br />
graduate-level courses.<br />
The GRE scores or GPA are below the<br />
required minimum.<br />
Applicants must also submit the names of<br />
three references, including contact information,<br />
and a statement of intent with their<br />
application.<br />

Teaching / Coaching<br />
Courses must be approved by the stu dent’s<br />
advisor/committee. These courses should<br />
be 500-600 level, with allowance for 300-<br />
400 level courses on a case-by-case basis.<br />
Graduate assistants who will be teaching<br />
during their second year are required to take<br />
KINS 615 (College Teaching in Kinesiology).<br />
Those not des ig nated as graduate assistants<br />
may count this course as an elective.<br />
Capstone Course<br />
KINS 690 Thesis Writing Seminar<br />
This is required for all graduate options.<br />
Successful completion of the degree requires<br />
a thesis, a project, or written comprehensive<br />
exams. The thesis and proj ect<br />
include an oral defense.<br />
