The Program<br />

Students completing this program will have<br />

demonstrated:<br />

the ability to analyze complex historical<br />

and social events, and the cultural expressions<br />

of individuals and communities, from<br />

a multiple perspective of race, gender,<br />

ethnicity, nationality, class, and religion<br />

the application of discipline-specific knowledge<br />

to workplace and/or post-baccalaureate<br />

environments<br />

an understanding of complex interactions<br />

of ethnic groups in their social contexts in<br />

the United <strong>State</strong>s and the world achieved in<br />

the study of language, diverse cultural expressions,<br />

and social struggles<br />

the use of all four language skills (oral,<br />

writing, reading, and comprehension) appropriately<br />

to function in authentic linguistic<br />

and cultural contexts<br />

the capacity to critically reflect, adapt,<br />

and network in a non-academic space or<br />

organization in a collaborative and professional<br />

manner<br />

the ability to gather information and use<br />

necessary analytical skills to evaluate the<br />

impact of private and public policies on regional,<br />

national, and international environments<br />

and cultures.<br />

Certified Education Program<br />

This program is certified by the California<br />

Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).<br />

Therefore, this program also prepares<br />

graduates to teach Spanish in junior high and<br />

high school. Students earning this degree<br />

may waive CSET assessments before entering<br />

the credential program. Before applying<br />

to the secondary education credential program,<br />

students must meet the prerequisite<br />

of 45 hours early field experience or enroll in<br />

SED 210/SED 410. (For complete informa-<br />

tion on the secondary education credential<br />

program, see Education.)<br />

All classes are taught in Spanish, from basic<br />

to advanced levels, with all four linguistic<br />

skills em pha sized: listening, speaking, reading,<br />

and writ ing. Courses in literature and<br />

civilization pro vide the opportunity for critical<br />

understand ing of the cultural heritage of the<br />

Spanish-speaking world, including the US.<br />

Social events, weekend re treats, lit er ary<br />

workshops, and discussions on social and<br />

pol i tical contemporary issues provide<br />

ample opportunity for faculty and students<br />

to interact.<br />

Students are encouraged to study abroad<br />

through the department-led international<br />

programs in Oaxaca and Parras, or the<br />

CSU international programs in Granada,<br />

Madrid, Mexico City, and Santiago, Chile.<br />

Opportunities at other study sites are provided<br />

by the HSU International Center.<br />

Graduates of this program have found careers<br />

as: teachers, interpreters, literary or<br />

technical translators, in ternational bankers<br />

or financiers, travel agents, foreign serv ice<br />

offi cers, foreign correspondents, and airline<br />

employees. Many coun ty, state, and federal<br />

agencies offer jobs for which knowledge of<br />

Spanish is either desirable or required.<br />

Preparation<br />

A good background in Eng lish grammar and<br />

syntax is de sir able. Previous Spanish study<br />

is wel come but not required.<br />

48 upper division units, at least <strong>12</strong> to be<br />

com pleted at the <strong>Humboldt</strong> campus. Degree<br />

requirements listed here do not include professional<br />

education courses required for the<br />
