The Program<br />

This program includes extensive field work to<br />

prepare stu dents to teach physical education<br />

to individuals with disabil ities. Students<br />

develop teaching com pe ten cies in perceptual<br />

motor de vel op ment, aqua tics, game and<br />

sports skills, and physical fit ness.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Sub mit the fol low ing documents to Kinesiology<br />

letter of application, stating interest in<br />

work ing with a special group<br />

Minor in American Indian Education<br />

This minor is housed within the College of<br />

Professional Studies.<br />

The Program<br />

The American Indian Education (AIE) minor<br />

provides an understanding of the particular<br />

educational needs of American Indian students,<br />

as well as the skills to apply methodologies<br />

and classroom practices conducive to<br />

academic success and validation of cultural<br />

identity and values.<br />

Having a positive self-identity and strong cultural<br />

affirmation is key for the success of any<br />

student in school and in life, but American<br />

Indian students face assaults on their identity<br />

and culture on a daily basis. To help ensure<br />

success in working with American Indian<br />

students and communities, the College of<br />

Professional Studies provides a rigorous<br />

<strong>2011</strong>-20<strong>12</strong> <strong>Humboldt</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Catalog<br />

three letters of recommendation for<br />

admis sion to the pro gram<br />

transcripts of all previous college work<br />

Applicants must hold a basic teaching credential<br />

au th or izing the teaching of physical<br />

educa tion. A sin gle subject credential with<br />

a supple men tary au tho ri zation in sports<br />

and games is not a valid basic credential.<br />

The following are accept able: single subject<br />

in physical education; multiple subject;<br />

standard secondary with a major or minor<br />

in kinesiology; stan dard elementary with a<br />

major or minor in kinesiology; standard early<br />

childhood; special secondary in PE; general<br />

elementary; general secondary; junior high<br />

school; kindergarten—primary.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

All students receiving the Adapted Phys ical<br />

Edu ca tion Specialist Credential must:<br />

successfully complete the California<br />

Basic Edu ca tion Skills Test (CBEST)<br />

American Indian Education Minor<br />

curriculum designed to heighten awareness<br />

of the numerous and complex issues surrounding<br />

Amer ican Indian education, along<br />

with successful educational models and<br />

classroom applications.<br />

maintain a 3.0 GPA in the following required<br />

The American Indian Education minor is<br />

strongly recommended for participants in<br />

the Indian Teacher & Educational Personnel<br />

Program (ITEPP) who are pursuing education-related<br />

careers (see ITEPP). AIE courses<br />

also comprise optional depths of study in the<br />

Liberal Studies Elementary Education major,<br />

a specialization within the Child Development<br />

major, as well as a special area of emphasis<br />

in the MA Education program.<br />

AIE courses are available to all HSU students.<br />

Community members may enroll through<br />

Extended Education; call 707-826-3731 for<br />

a schedule of classes and information about<br />

the American Indian Education professional<br />

development certificate.<br />
