The Program<br />

This coursework develops and refines skills<br />

nec es sary in teaching English as a second<br />

language (in the US, foreign schools, and<br />

language institutes).<br />

The requirements for the TESL minor are<br />

equivalent to the requirements for the<br />

CLAD certificate (Crosscultural Language<br />

and <strong>Academic</strong> Development) recognized<br />

by the California Commission on Teacher<br />

Credentialing. See Crosscultural Language<br />

and <strong>Academic</strong> Development for a full description<br />

of that program.<br />

For a master’s level TESL program, see the<br />

TESL minor in the English MA program.<br />

Preparation<br />

Take high school or community college<br />

courses in English, languages other than<br />

English, and ethnic studies.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR<br />

Six semester units of a language other than<br />

English taken at the university level or at an<br />

intensive language pro gram<br />

ENGL 326 Language Studies for<br />

Teachers or<br />

ENGL 328 Structure of American<br />

English<br />

All of the following:<br />

COMM 322 Intercultural Communication<br />

ENGL/COMM 417 Second Language<br />

Acquisition<br />

ENGL 435 Issues in English as a<br />

Second/Foreign Language<br />

ENGL 436 Integrating Language &<br />

Content in English Instruction<br />

Note: ENGL 435 is a prerequisite for 436.<br />

Also, ENGL 326 or 328 or the equivalent is<br />

a prerequsite for ENGL/COMM 417.<br />
