The Program<br />
Students completing this minor will have<br />
demonstrated the ability to:<br />
use intersectional analysis to examine<br />
social issues from a social justice perspective<br />
understand prominent debates in critical<br />
social theory<br />
use postcolonial analysis to examine<br />
gendered, racialized, and/or sexualized relations<br />
in a trans-national context<br />
understand the importance of history to<br />
social justice movements.<br />
As the academic branch of the wom en’s<br />
move ment, Wom en’s Studies challenges<br />
assump tions up on which the Western<br />
tradition of schol ar ship has been based<br />
and seeks to inte grate the diverse ex pe riences<br />
and perspectives of women into the<br />
curric ulum.<br />
Our core curriculum offers students the<br />
analytical tools for understanding gender<br />
as it is constructed with in and through differences<br />
of ethnic ity, class, sexuality, and nationality.<br />
It enables students to interpret the<br />
diverse lives, issues, and voices of women in<br />
our multicultural and trans national world.<br />
Women’s Studies faculty, from departments<br />
campuswide, work close ly with the program<br />
leader to offer a dynamic and studentcentered<br />
minor, certificate of study, as well<br />
as the pathway in Women’s Studies within<br />
the IS Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality<br />
Studies major. Our program also works with<br />
the student-run Wom en’s Resource Center<br />
and other wom en’s groups on campus to<br />
provide a network of resources, support,<br />
and referral on women-centered issues,<br />
<strong>2011</strong>-20<strong>12</strong> <strong>Humboldt</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Catalog<br />
organizations, and events. We sponsor<br />
programs of in ter est to wom en, including<br />
workshops and speakers.<br />
This pro gram is useful in the follow ing<br />
careers: administrator of nonprofit women’s<br />
organization, affir ma tive action offi cer,<br />
attorney, community organizer, computer<br />
software designer, coordinator of women’s<br />
programs in government and business,<br />
counselor, editor, environmental activist,<br />
international development worker, journalist,<br />
legal assistant, lobbyist for women’s issues,<br />
political advocate, psychologist, rape crisis<br />
specialist, re search er on wom en’s projects,<br />
social work er, teacher, union organizer, urban<br />
planner, women’s center director, wom en’s<br />
health care specialist, writer.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR<br />
The minor consists of 16 units: 10 required<br />
units plus six elective units. At least one<br />
course (3 units minimum) must have<br />
significant international content.<br />
