Gellert's, next door to the Eastman Theater on Gibb's Street has a simple, but pleasant atmosphere. It caters in large part to the theater crowd. Sibley's, one of the downtown department stores, has a surprisingly good restaurant on its top floor, as well as snack bars and a pastry shop on the ground floor. In McCurdy's are the Garden Room and Oak Room. If you have a reallv tiaht budoet, there are also some choices. There are a couple of soup and sandwich places in Midtown Plaza, which used to be several downtown city blocks and now is a completely enclosed shopping mall located at Main and Clinton, two blocks east of the Convention Center. Try the Great Canadian Soup Company. There is also a Burger King in this complex. The Top of the Plaza (take the elevator) does not fall in the inexpensive class, but is reputed to have good hamburgers for lunch and would be good for a more expensive evening meal.. There are McDonalds on Main Street, about one block east of the Convention Center, and on State Street, across the street from the Rochester Plaza. Sweet Dawn's, at the corner of Main Street and Stone, is good for soup and sandwiches. Across State Street from the Kodak Office building is Rubino's, selling submarine sandwiches and the associated items. Rubino's also runs the Salumeria Care in Midtown Plaza. If you want to aet a little further from the Convention Center, look on Alexander Street, whi-ch crosses East Avenue on the other Side of the Inner Loop, on Park Avenue, which crosses Alexander about a block south of East Avenue, or on Monroe Avenue, which crosses Alexander still further South.. Some of the restaurants on Alexander are rather expensive. The Park Avenue area is a bit "yuppie" and spills over onto Monroe. The best restaurant bargains are probably on Monroe. Several different ethnic groups are represented. If YOU have a car. there is a wide choice of restaurants. You might want to try the Spring House, 3001 Monroe Avenue (take the freeway), an inn that originally was located next to the Erie Canal. (The canal moved; the restaurant is where it always was, but if you look closely off to the side behind the building you can see a trace of the old ditch.) On the present-day canal, but much further out, is Richardson's Canal House, 1474 March Road, the only restaurant in Rochester listed in the Mobil guide. 9
