We’ve seen an integrated circuit (IC) before and we know<br />

what it looks like, but we’ve never used one before, so we’ll<br />

take a closer look at the 555 now. It is an 8-pin dual-in-line<br />

(DIL) device and one is shown in Photo 5.5. Somewhere on<br />

its body is a notch or dot, which indicates the whereabouts<br />

of pin 1 of the IC as shown in Figure 5.1. The remainder of the<br />

pins are numbered in sequence in an anti-clockwise direction<br />

around the IC.<br />
