SAGES 2017 Surgical Spring Week
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM *Included in Registration SuperPass (Option A) or Registration Option B
Postgraduate Course: Primary Endoscopic Management
of the Bariatric Patient
Chair: Matthew Kroh, MD | Co-Chair: Salman Al-Sabah, MD
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The obesity epidemic continues and despite the success of bariatric surgery, many patients with significant disease are
not receiving or are not eligible for existing therapies. Endoluminal treatments for obesity and weight-related conditions
provide additional non-surgical options for patients. Rapid development and recent approvals are giving patients access
to new treatments. This session will examine the currently available endoluminal therapies approved to treat obesity
and weight-related disease as well as introduce some novel and evolving technologies. Emphasis will be on patient
eligibility and selection, technique of procedure, and existing data to help guide endoscopists and surgeons.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Distinguish different endoluminal targets and mechanism of action of procedures for primary treatment of obesity
• Identify which patients who are eligible for different endoluminal therapies, including selection based on BMI,
weight-related co-morbid disease, and existing anatomy
• Assess data and demonstrate practice paradigms of how endoluminal therapies fit within the context of a
comprehensive bariatric program
