SESSION DESCRIPTION<br />

This session will discuss the essentials of starting surgical practice after completing surgical training, including finding<br />

and negotiating jobs in surgery, financial and clinical aspects of running a surgical practice, balancing a surgical<br />

career with personal life, and strategies for academic success. This session is intended for surgical trainees at all<br />

levels, including medical students, residents and fellows, and early-career faculty (within about 5 years of starting<br />

independent practice).<br />

SESSION OBJECTIVES<br />

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:<br />

• Prepare for a surgical job interview and use effective negotiation strategies, including a review of practice structures<br />

and contract do’s and don’ts<br />

• Implement strategies within their practice to improve patient care, and to make their practice financially<br />

sustainable, including a review of quality metrics for surgeons<br />

• Manage their finances to plan for life events and retirement<br />

• Present their scholarly work in surgery in medical journals and scientific meetings<br />
